Texas technology company Genband closed on a important Nortel business unit on Friday, getting the area's newest technologies company. The RTP office will be one of its biggest operations.
Almost 100 percent of the workers in Nortel's Carrier VOIP and Applications Solutions unit agreed to join Genband as part of the $282 million acquisition, according to the company. The CVAS unit bought by Genband had 2,500 employees worldwide. By acquiring the unit, Genband's workforce expanded from about 500 to about 3,000.
Using the Nortel acquisition, Genband also gains websites in Ottawa and China. Today Genband will make further announcements concerning the company's combined executive team and other strategic decisions.
"Raleigh will be one with the greatest and most strategic locations Genband has and will continue to become a center of excellence as Genband's global assistance and support area with more than 500 people situated there," Mehmet Balos, Genband's Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement.
Genband specializes in Internet Protocol equipment that's utilized to transmit phone calls, e-mails and other information. Nortel's CVAS device specialized in Voice Over Web Protocol.
Genband now has research and development, sales and assistance, spanning 46 countries. The company's customers include Verizon and AT&T, two of this country's biggest telecommunications providers.
Genband made a bid for the unit in December, 11 months after Nortel sought bankruptcy protection. At its peak about a decade ago, the Canadian telecommunications gear maker employed about 10,000 at its RTP site.
