Tokyo, Nintendo
I know it's a terrible excuse, but I've been really busy lately. I keep telling myself I won't let it slip, but my blog always seems to get neglected. So, what's been going on you might wonder? Well, I was lucky enough to get shipped out to our Tokyo office for work. Most of the time I was there was spent working, but I did manage to have some time to mess around. I went along with
Berit, Opera's device PR manager. She's got some nice
pictures up in one of her photo albums if you're curious.
This was my first time to Japan, and I must say I had a blast. The Tokyo Opera office is really great and everyone was super nice to us (thanks everyone!). It was great to get a bit warmer weather and a change in food (noodles there are amazing).
Now, I've been a huge fan of Nintendo since my father brought home the 8 bit NES system. I remember The Legend of Zelda being my first game and thinking it was absolutely amazing. The graphics were unreal (compared to my Atari). Later, I somehow convinced my parents to score me a Gameboy, SNES and later I got a job and blew a good chunk of my pay on an N64. In college, my roommate bought a GameCube, my mother was a fan of the Nintendo Advanced. Anyways - you get the point. I'm a huge fan of Nintendo and really looking forward to the Nintendo DS Lite and Revolution (or "wii" as I guess it's now called).
So why this huge rambling about Nintendo? Well, some may have heard, but Opera is going to be coming out pretty soon for the Nintendo DS (and DS Lite). I was actually able to play with the browser first-hand and I must say, I'm really impressed. The purpose of my trip was to meet with Nintendo. I won't go into details, but I will say going there was a bit of a pilgrimage for me.

Nintendo, DS, Opera
Okay - if you've read my blog before, you know I'm a fan of gaming. I care less about shiny graphics but more about actual "fun" - shocking, isn't it? Some of my favorite games are low-fi including
Uplink and
Wesnoth for PC (both available natively on Windows Mac and Linux) and
Darwinia available on Win and Linux.
I've been somewhat amused with some offerings by Sony and *shudder* Xbox, but no matter the cost and glammer, nothing has reached out to me as being "fun". I've always respected Nintedo for innovating, much as I've respected Opera in the same way.
So today we've announced the Opera Browser for the Nintendo DS. I've been holding off on buying one till the new DS Lite (or whatever it's called) is released. I really can't wait. There are already a bunch of really great games available and some that allow online network play.
Now I just have to wait for the Revolution.
You can read more about the DS release on the
frontpage of My Opera, in
Lawmune's good blog summary or in
the forum.
