Whatever happened to communication?

Reuters: Top News: "NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin on Monday suspended a plan to bring residents back to New Orleans and told all those now in the stricken city to leave because of fears a new storm headed into the Gulf of Mexico could swamp damaged levees and wreak new havoc."
The mayor orders businesses to reopen and consumers to return. The director (make that the new director) of FEMA says it's premature to reopen New Orleans. Then the mayor says, uh, well, maybe we should hold off. Everyone get out!
I realize the politics involved in all this, but this constant disrupting or, more aptly put, playing with people's lives is getting ridiculous. Instead of making all these statements to the press, why not pick up a phone, email, IM or Skype for cryin' out loud and COMMUNICATE.
Is it not enough to deal with terrorists and Mother Nature and life in general without having politcians playing people like pieces on a board?
There are two key elements that make living together on this planet bearable - caring and communication. It is painfully obvious that the politicians involved in all this are doing neither.
Please stop looking at polling data, listening to the press and your political anaylists and your own mothers (in some cases) and start looking and listening to the people - your people.
