This week's
featured appliance in the
SUSE Gallery is BrowserBox! The front page will show a big promotion of the appliance for one week.
I am flattered by the recognition, and even before the advertence, BrowserBox was climbing toward the 20th most
popular appliance in the SUSE Gallery. It's nice to be see that more people see the use of BrowserBox and I appreciate any feedback you might have to improve the appliance further.

BrowserBox is a an appliance for web developers wanting to test sites in various web browsers. Maybe you don't want to clutter your own installation with dozens of browsers, or you use several computers for web development and don't want to go through the hassle of installing everything everywhere.
The appliance is based on the Linux distribution openSUSE 11.3 running KDE 4.4, but you don't need to have Linux installed or have any previous Linux experience.
BrowserBox is easy to use, and you can start it either by burning a CD, putting it on an USB stick, or the most convenient way, by loading it in the free virtualization software VirtualBox or VMWare Player.
This version includes 12 different browsers and easy installation scripts for 2 more. In total you'll have access to 22 different browser versions.

Thanks to
some help from Austin English from Wine I could add the Windows versions of Safari 4 and 5, as easy install scripts, to SmallBox. This means another WebKit browser, so I removed Arora. Note that in Windows you can't have both 4 and 5 installed at the same time.
The Safari install script download the setup files on first run, adds a small fix to prevent Safari from crashing on the first run, and then runs Safari. This fix was also added to
winetricks, but it will probably take some time for it to make it to the repositories, so for now it's a home made fix. Beware that Safari will crash if you open the "new tab" page, but opening a link in a new tab is fine.
Browsers included in 0.2:
- Chromium
- Firefox 2, 3, 3.5, 3.6
- Internet Explorer 6, 7 install scripts (Wine)
- Opera 9.26, 9.64, 10.10, 10.60
- Opera Mobile 10.0
- Opera Mini 4.2, 5.1 (MicroEmulator)
- Safari 4, 5 install scripts (Wine)
