Chi Lang Defile

The defile consists of a valley surrounded by high mountains and through which runs the Thuong River.

The Chi Lang Defile is in the Chi Lang District of Lang Son Province, 110 km from the Sino – Vietnamese border. The border consists of a valley surrounded by high mountains with the Thuong River running through. The mountains were opened in two locations to form two gates. The northern gate was named Quy Nhon Quan, meaning “monster gate”, after the Chinese invaders who entered Vietnam here. The southern gate was called Ngo The, meaning, “swearing gate”. Vietnamese ancestors who swore to sacrifice their lives to protect their mother built them.

In the past, in this area that King Le Hoan defeated the Chinese Sung troops in 981 and killed all the enemies. In 1076, Prince Consort Than Canh Phuc set a front line against 300,000 Sung enemies. Led by Quach Quy in 1285, Nguyen Dia Lo killed traitor Tran Kien in the second National Resistance against Yuan-Mongol invaders. In 1427, Lam Son righteous army killed invader leader Lieu Thang, caught Hoang Phuc, killed 10,000 Ming enemies and overthrew all their maneuvers.

Now Chi Lang Defile is considered a historical vestige with imposing landscape where visitors stop to enjoy the natural scenery.

In center of Sapa Townlet, Sapa District, Lao Cai District; 33km from Lao Cai City. Ham Rong Mountain is an attractive tourist area in the center of Sapa Townlet.

Legend has it that in the distance past, all animals lived together in a chaotic environment. One day, Jade Emperor gave an order that every species of animal had to find for them an area to live. Having heard the order, they scrambled for a place to reside. The three brothers of dragon who were living in a large lake hurriedly ran to the east but could not find any place; they then ran tothe west. The two older brothers ran fast and came to the destination first. The youngest brother ran slowly and strayed into the crowds of lions, tigers and big cats. Fearing that these animals would attack it, the dragon opened its mouth to defense itself. At that time, the order of Jade Emperor was no longer available, so the three dragons petrified. The two older dragons, which were waiting for their brother, face Lao Cai City, and the youngest one raising its head and opening mouth faces the Hoang Lien Mountain Range. So the mountain is named Ham Rong (Jaw of Dragon).

Tra Su Forest

Tra Su cajeput forest in Tien Bien district of the southern province of An Giang is to become an ideal eco-tourism site in the future after the provincial authority has decided to form the forest into a nature reserve.

The forest has been restored since 1983 with a current extension area of 700 hectares. This ecological spot is the habitat of many genera of water birds (mostly storks), colonies of bats and various rare animal and bird species. Especially tourists will be flabbergasted by small houses on stilts with rudimentary bamboo ceilings that are firmly tightened to cajuput trees, making an unusual existence in the quiet ambience of the forest. They are actually restoration work of a provincial-level revolutionary base of the An Giang people and soldiers in the glorious struggle against the US imperialists.

Standing on a 10m high watch tower in the midst of the forest, tourists can enjoy a panorama of the vast greenery spotted with the white of storks below. Turtles, snakes, as well as other reptiles and freshwater fishes are also abundant in the canals.

Endowed with peace and tranquility, Tra Su Forest will certainly become a unique and attractive destination for tourists who love the beauty of nature.

Flights within Vietnam

, ,

Fares for domestic flights are fixed and determined by distance, although there are some discount fares for advance purchase (with restrictions), late night flights, and student and senior fares. Vietnam Airlines and Pacific Airlines both offer similar levels of quality and safety, with Pacific Airlines offering slightly cheaper fares.

Internal flight coverage is pretty good in Vietnam with frequent flights to many cities. The price is reasonable and airfare can be altered without any difficulty.

Vietnam Airlines: Vietnam Airlines is the dominant and exclusive air carrier on domestic Vietnam air routes with regular flights to over 15 destinations. Vietnam Airlines flies a modern fleet of Boeing 777 and 767 aircraft, Airbus 321 and 320 aircraft, ATR 72 aircraft, and Fokker 70 aircraft.

On-time arrival, on-time departure and the safety record of Vietnam Airlines is excellent compared to any international standards. Though cabin service does not quite yet match international standards, reliability, performance and constantly improving service are the hallmarks of Vietnam Airlines.

Pacific Airlines: Pacific Airlines recently created as a low-cost carrier that also accepts online booking, serves domestic flights to 3 destinations and Vasco Airlines serves 4, and the two airlines will open more routes in the time to come. The Pacific Airlines normal fare is less expensive than those of Vietnam Airlines.

Vietnam Airlines, the state-owned airline, is the major carrier in Vietnam for domestic flights. A second domestic airline, Pacific Airlines, which is owned by Vietnam Airlines, also offers flights between Hanoi, HCMC and Danang.

Flight booking tips: It is recommended to book Vietnam Airlines flights with local travel agents because it is significantly more expensive to book domestic flights outside of Vietnam.
