Did you know that typically, the pain you are feeling in your back is stemming from swelling or inflammation? You can get rid of the swelling or at least reduce it by applying ice to the area where the pain is most severe. This is by far the most effective way to reduce pain quickly. In fact, it's why most people prefer to just take over the counter pain killers - pain killers contain anti-inflammatory medicine.
Over the counter pain killers will also reduce inflammation, but they won't always work as fast as a cold compress, and the effect won't always last as long. Furthermore, sometimes people experience side effects with pain medication that they wouldn't experience using ice. Natural pain relief tends to be better in the long run.
Using a cold compress is simple. You just put it on the area that hurts, but you may want to wrap it in a dry towel first to reduce discomfort. Keep the ice pack or cold compress on the area for 15 minutes and then take it off. You can repeat again in another 15 minutes if you need to, but only do it for 15 minutes at a time.
A second, simple back pain relief technique is to lie on your back on a floor. Lie still for between 5 and 10 minutes. Your arms should be by your side with your palms down. If you need to, you can bend your knees so that your arch is supported, by pressing it into the ground.
Similar to that technique, standing with your back flat against a wall is also effective. This will also help with posture correction, and posture is a leading cause of chronic back pain. Stand back against the wall, arms your side, making sure your entire back is up against the wall. Stand in this position for 5 minutes.
