I'm not making a big deal out of any of this; if you're reading a hostile tone or something into this, then that's your issue. I'm just saying that no one in America cares at all which spelling of grey you use. Just because you lived in both places doesn't mean you understand how the locals feel. The reason that Brits are "more protective of their language" is that they don't understand the concept of language drift or dialects. It's not being protective to say that someone who has a different dialect is wrong; it's being pretentious. I was once lectured by a bitch from Cumbria for like 2 hours about how everything I say and write is wrong, not different because of my geographic location, but completely wrong. Again, I'm not being a dick; I'm just saying that it doesn't matter in America. I know a girl who exclusively uses the spelling "colour," and none of her professors, or anyone else for that matter, care that she uses it, either. As for the travelled thing, maybe it's regional in the US, because I mostly see it spelled with 2 els here.
