After church on Sunday, a long time friend of mine, and attorney, came up to me and said the he really needed a change. He know that I make my living at home in my boxers, and asked if there was anything that I could recommend for him.
Being a little curious, I asked him what the problem seemed to be. He said that all through law school he wondered if this was going to be something he really wanted to do long term. He said that not only has he giving up a huge amount of time from his family, he felt like he needed to take a shower everyday when he got home.
I asked him what he meant by that and he said that he was very disillusioned by the tactics required to further his causes. He said that he was tired of all the grey and that often times he isn't even sure what's right or wrong anymore.
He continued explaining that he had been with his firm for 9 years now and that he felt a little trapped. He said that he mode a sizeable amount of money and did not think that it would be easy to replace, or he said smiling, make more. Then he said that he and his wife had talked several times about the fact that I work from home and thought that we sure would like the idea. I even read a book on the topic, but I did not feel I really had a niche market.
It was at this point that I got a real idea of how much he had been thinking about this. He started telling me about his dream of traveling and how he had always wanted to see this place or that place. He said that he wants his kids to see more of the world first hand. He said he believed that travel was a great way to help his kids get perspective on their own lives. He said that he wife was a military brat, and he was tired of hearing about all of the places she had traveled or lived.
Being quite surprised by how much he had really thought about all of this, I thought he was not just brining this up in passing. At this point, I asked him what I felt was the next logical question, "Do you have any money to try and get something started? He said that he and his wife were guilty of putting saving off for too long. He said that the 6 plus figures it took to start a franchise, was out of the question.
I thought I would drop a little bomb on him and check his metal. I said, "You do know that most business owners got through 5 failed businesses, a bankruptcy, a divorce and a whole lot of sleepless nights don't you?" He laughed and said that's why he was talking to me. He said that he had hoped I would help him avoid a few of those landmines.
I asked him if he knew Clark Howard the famous radio personality and consumer advocate. He said of course, he loved that guy. I said, "You know he got his start in the travel industry. Not only that, but it is a 5 trillion dollar industry and the fastest growing industry in the world right now." He said, "Wow that would be amazing. I didn't expect to hear something that wonderful during our first conversation. I said that I had just the thing he might be looking for.
