I'm watching the debate between the party leaders and rapidly losing the will to live. Mostly the same old tripe, but I'm currently getting mightily fed up of all the talk of public sector pay freezes and "looking at" public sector pensions.
Contrary to what the tabloid press tends to scream, most people in the public sector are on below average pay already, and our pensions are about the only thing keeping us going. Two questions spring to mind:
1. Are these freezes going to apply to the people at the top, or will it be one rule for most of us (serious caps on pay) and another for the big-wigs (whopping huge rises on top of already huge salaries)? Because up till now it's always been the two tier setup...
2. How come the bankers cause the economic meltdown but we end up paying to fix it? Why aren't the bankers' pensions being "looked at"? Why aren't bankers' salaries being capped and the banks taxed till the pips squeak?
If you want to cut waste, try dumping most of the senior managers in public service, or at least seriously cutting their pay, because they're the ones wasting the cash, not the people at the coal face on poor money.
