Experiments!

, ,

image465595553.jpgWell I've been experimenting with blogging apps on my iPhone in an attempt to get back my photo blogging capability as emailing photos doesn't work since I switched phones.

I've also been playing with the excellent CameraBag software, which lets you process photos so they look like they were taken with cameras such as the Lomo and Holga. So here's a nice lomo-ised photo to start the new era :-)

Another test

I'm wondering if photo upload only works if the email doesn't have paragraph breaks. So this doesn't have any.

Edit: Well, it's not paragraph breaks, it must be to do with the structure of the email. This is the second of two identical emails - same text, same photo. Only difference is that the first (failed) version was created from Pictures using Send as and adding address, subject and text afterwards, whereas this (successful) version was started as a new email, with the photo being attached from the email application.

At last I think I have things sussed...

... so I can stop messing about and actually blog something other than tests and moans :D

Blogging from my phone

If the option to remove network crud is switched ON:
  • MMS entries don't get through at all.
  • E-mail entries don't get through at all.

If the option to remove network crud is switched OFF:
  • MMS entries containing plain text occasionally get through (but with a load of junk from O2 tacked onto the front of them). Those with pictures don't get through at all.
  • E-mail entries (including those with picture attachments) seem to get through properly (will test again later with a proper post.

Verdict: keep the junk filter OFF and use email.

Uploading photos from my phone

If the option to remove network crud is switched ON:
  • MMS entries don't get through at all.
  • E-mail entries very occasionally get through - the only successful one I had was with a low-res photo, FWIW.

If the option to remove network crud is switched OFF:
  • MMS entries seem to get through (but with a load of junk from O2 tacked onto the front of the description).
  • E-mail entries don't seem to get through.

In addition:
  • Uploading from Opera Mini (along with photoblogging) doesn't work - there's no way of selecting a file to upload.
  • Uploading from the Sony Ericsson browser (Internet) doesn't work, you just get a page telling you to use MMS, no upload form.
  • Uploading from Opera Mobile won't work for albums which have MMS enabled, you don't get an upload form. If MMS isn't enabled for the album, you can finally get to an upload form and it works (but for some reason it eats vast quantities of data in the process). Unfortunately I can't find a way of moving a photo from one album to another after upload, so keeping one album MMS enabled and another not enabled means your photos are forever and a day locked into which ever album they first landed in.

Verdict: keep the junk filter OFF and use MMS.

All of the above is using an SE p910i.

Right, now onto something a lot less boring!

Edit: You know, I could throw bricks. While I was writing this entry two (later: make that four, and counting...) of my failed MMS entries have turned up (now deleted - they weren't worth keeping. Will have to check the photo album to see if anything missing has now turned up after two days (later: nope; later still: yup, two and counting...). Argh!

Just checking

... to see if email is still working since I changed the MMS settings to remove network junk. Which seems to have blocked MMS posting completely.

And it didn't work. E-mail posting works fine (so far) if you don't have the account set to remove operator crud, but you just get a title if you have it switched on. I'm guessing that that could explain why photo album uploads have only worked once so far, and I've had an error complaining that one message had no photos in it.

Whatever, I think I'll stick to email as it seems to work most of the time and it's cheaper...

More failed tests

Thanks to the guys who commented on my earlier post re things not working well here. I've found the setting to cut operator junk out of MMS posts and turned it on, also set up a photo album with the same settings.

Just tried sending a text only MMS to my blog and a photo to my album using the relevant email addresses and yet again they've disappeared into the void...

So much for MMS posting and photo blogging

Well, so far, so disappointing.Main attraction of setting up an Opera blog was being able to blog from my phone, with pictures.

First I find out that neither photo blogging nor file upload works in Opera Mini from my phone (an SE p910i). Now I find that MMS postings are just disappearing into thin air. I've sent three now: one mixed photo and text; one just text; one just a photo. None have worked.

Sorry, Opera, that's really pants :-(

Edit: well while I was typing this entry, the text-only MMS has gone through. Though it's full of crap from O2 as you can see, so it's still flipping useless. I give up.

A first post...

This is just a first post to see if everything is working OK.

Apologies for the cartoon picture, I don't have any decent photos to hand at the moment. I'll have to watch myself, though - if I leave it there too long I'll get used to it and it'll be there forever!
