Mother's Day - An Influence on Chickens???

Spring has sprung for CC (Chicky Chick) and GG (Girly Girl). They are both determined to be mothers, even if they have to be mothers of inanimate objects.

CC and GG are two very small hens. They have both decided they are going to sit on eggs. Which would be fine except they have no eggs to sit on. One, CC, has a golf ball, and the other GG has a ping pong ball. They are both very possessive about their "eggs". They have been trying to hatch these "eggs" for about a week now. They refuse to go into the chicken house at night, CC hides in a corner and GG stays in the oak tree. Every night I gather up these girls, put them to bed, then the next morning, they cheerfully seek out their golf ball and ping pong ball and settle down for a long day of 'hatching'.

I REALLY hope that ping-pong ball hatches. If for no other reason than it would make a great story.

How sweet! Though frustrating! I had a hen last year who disappeared for a couple of weeks. I thought she was dead.
Well..we saw her one day in the main part of the barn looking for food.
We followed her back to her nest of eggs...the only problem is...we had no rooster! p: Poor thing was broody for about a month.
Anyhow..we have a rooster now..so we shall see if she'll let him do his thing.

Where did they find the balls? They sound so industrious!!!

By momable, # 5. June 2008, 00:46:25

avatar
 I gave them the balls. They won't lay eggs in a box unless there is already an egg in there. I could leave an old egg, but then I might pick it up by mistake and try to cook with it :yuck: or the raccoons will come and eat it, so I give them a ping pong ball or a golf ball, the chickens think it's an egg, but the raccoons and I both know better!

By cakkleberrylane, # 5. June 2008, 01:33:46

avatar
That is so interesting. So, to get them to lay an egg in a certain place, you have to trick them.

By momable, # 5. June 2008, 02:30:15

avatar
Well, they're not too bright, so it isn't really hard to trick them!!
