Home Again!

It's good to be home, well sort of...

We had a great visit with my mum and dad in Toronto, we even managed a couple of days at their summer cottage on Lake Huron. The leaves were stunning and the scenery beautiful as always. We were able to help them move some furniture as they are having new floors put into the house and space needed to be made for the floor contractors to work. After that, back to Toronto where Arthur worked and I visited and relaxed!

We crossed from Canada to the US at Niagara Falls and managed to get a few pictures. It was a pretty cold and overcast day, the falls would have looked much nicer in the sunlight, but at this time of year, I guess we were just lucky it wasn't snowing.
If you look slightly to the right of center and (middle) in the second shot you can just make out the people standing in their yellow raincoats. It should give you some idea of the size of the falls if you have never seen them in person.
We had customers to see on the way home, which broke up the first part of the trip. The shot above is Pittsburg at night. Lots of changes in altitude there, this is where much of the coal comes from for American electricity.
I thought this was a pretty cool tunnel.
The last day was a long drive, we stayed in Virginia, then left at 4:30 am, drove 25 hours with a couple of stops for meals and to put air in a troublesome tire about a million times, finally arriving home in Florida at 5:30 am the next morning.

When we came home, we found that we had some predator which killed about 2/3 of my chickens, there are only about 20 left, the cats had managed to open a window and were gone, but they came back, cold, hungry and very scared. The house was pretty dusty, but I took care of that after a couple of hours sleep. So, although there were some sad things to come home to, it's still good to be back in the warm sunshine of Florida!

Two smiles for you:  and :frown:

First, nice you was with your parents and you rest a bit!
It seems you was in famouse places, as Niagara falls, your photos are beautiful, but your shot at night it's simply 100 stars!

Second smile, so sory Lois, i'm sad because of that, they are not good news! awww

But now you are at home and ready to post 365 project photos!

Did you see your mail box?:smile:

SittingFox 13. November 2008, 20:15

Sorry to hear about the loss of the chickens :frown:

That is an interesting tunnel. I've only been to the Falls once, in 2001, but loved their sheer scale. And you drove from Virginia to Florida in a day? :ko: I don't think that I'd do that in a bus!

cakkleberrylane 13. November 2008, 20:21

Thanks Ze!! As soon as I get caught up, I'll be posting photos!!

Thanks Adele, I drove from Toronto to Pittsburg, then Arthur drove from Pittsburg to Florida. I have to admit I got pretty cramped and uncomfortable, but didn't want to say anything since Arthur must have been suffering much worse! We took 2 cats and the dog to Toronto, then brought then all back. They travelled extremely well!

maddysman2003 13. November 2008, 20:23

Great pictures, my parents honeymooned at Niagara Falls. I have never been there myself.

cakkleberrylane 13. November 2008, 20:49

It's a great place to go! I think you would enjoy it. Niagara in the springtime is wonderful, but I think there is much to offer at any time of the year!

FrogBoots 14. November 2008, 01:18

Glad you are back home again, and back in 365! Of course, I'm very sorry to hear about the chickens, and happy to hear that the cats are all accounted for. I agree with Ze...your photo of Pittsburgh by night is fabulous!

studio41 14. November 2008, 04:11

Glad you are back safe and sound (can you fix that tire, now?)... sorry to hear about your chickens, what was it?

sanshan 14. November 2008, 04:12

My parents actually went to Niagra for their honeymoon! So cliche! But romantic.

Very sorry to hear about your chickens. That's a lot of chickens. :frown:

cakkleberrylane 14. November 2008, 11:18

Thanks everyone!! Yes, it's good to be home!! With the number of chickens gone (about 40), it must have been something big. One of the girls that was caring for them said she had a mother panther take all of hers once. She saw large and small footprints and thought that the mother was teaching the baby to hunt.
We found a possum in there Wednesday night, but although he was fairly large, no where near big enough to do that kind of damage.

ricewood 14. November 2008, 18:46

There you go; shit happens as we said in the seventies.

Good, though, that you had a nice trip. I love your night-shot of Pittsburg.

studio41 15. November 2008, 00:08

panther

??? what side of paradise is this, Lois. you could make a movie with all the 'wild' life

cakkleberrylane 15. November 2008, 00:13

More wildlife here than in downtown New York, I think!

FXM256 15. November 2008, 04:55

Wow, you did a lot of traveling on your trip. Sounds like you had a good time too.

studio41 15. November 2008, 06:11

I hope you don't have any RATS there in FL!

DuckyChickenLady 15. November 2008, 13:37

Welcome home!! Those are great pics..and it's neat to see colours & leaves still on the trees! Here the trees are barren & looking ready for winter.
Great pics!!

cakkleberrylane 15. November 2008, 14:40

Thanks Cheryl, it was interesting to see the leaves en route too. Everything green in Florida, starting to turn a little in Georgia, by the time we got to New York, they were really petty.

momable 16. November 2008, 05:52

Welcome back. Sorry about your chickens...

DuckyChickenLady 16. November 2008, 13:42

Oh wow..I missed that comment about your chickens!! So sorry!!

cakkleberrylane 16. November 2008, 16:36

Thanks, I can"t get the remaining chickens out of the trees and last night we has owls - can't win!

DuckyChickenLady 16. November 2008, 19:59

Hope you can eventually coax them in... :worried:

momable 17. November 2008, 01:58

So chickens can fly! Do you remember that cartoon about the chickens trying to escape from a farm?

cakkleberrylane 17. November 2008, 12:02

Thanks! No, I don't remember it (oh age and memory - getting worse). Do you have a link?

zetorres 17. November 2008, 12:03

I know a movie animation about that!:smile:

Deke 17. November 2008, 22:59

Pah. All psyched up to do the Niagra joke and then I read about the poor li'l chickens.

Welcome home! :ironic:

cakkleberrylane 18. November 2008, 00:20

I'd still like to hear the Niagara joke!

eagle4eyes 20. November 2008, 05:16

Glad you are back home safe. Sorry to hear about your chickens. That must be heartbreaking. I have had a pair of Red Tail Hawks swooping down on my girls. They are safe and haul feathers for cover. They are also molting and feathers are everywhere. May life get back to some order. You are right the falls are beautiful in spring. I liked driving up the Niagra parkway which was just breath taking. The beauty of the scenery just spectacular!

cwbywz 20. November 2008, 17:11

The movie was "Chicken Run". Rocky the rooster got lost from a circus where he was shot out of a cannon. He wound up in a chicken pen where they nursed him back to health because from the circus poster, they think he can fly. They need him to teach them to fly so they can escape from the "concentration camp". If they don't make it, they will be put in a machine that makes chicken pot pies.
I won't ruin the ending for you. Great cartoon.
Welcome Home, Lois. Sorry about the chickens.

zetorres 20. November 2008, 21:15

cakkleberrylane 20. November 2008, 21:37

Sounds like an amazing movie!! I'll be rooting for Rocky!! Thanks for the welcome everyone!

PainterWoman 23. November 2008, 19:27

Somehow I have missed many of your posts!:irked:

The photos of your trip are grand. Love that night scene.

So sorry to hear about the chicken loss on your return home.

cakkleberrylane 23. November 2008, 19:37

Thanks PW!!

Cynthia23 28. November 2008, 18:33

Oh! Sorry to hear about your chickens! Glad your cats came home, and lovely photos!

cakkleberrylane 28. November 2008, 19:32

Thanks Cynthia!

momable 29. November 2008, 01:36

Yeah, the movie was Chicken Run. It is hilarious! Lois, you got to see it.
