Sandhill Crane Family

,

Not such a great day, it's been cold and windy for the last two days and I was fairly sure I wasn't going to see much on my excursion to the grocery store and gas station, but I was pleasantly surprised. Sandhill crane are so beautiful and we do often see them lunching along the roadside, but this is the first time I've seen them with chicks.

Look at all those long legs! This is delightful!

Robin 8. April 2009, 15:53

Lois: Great shots. Lucky you, to see them!! We get the Sandhill around here too, but I've never seen them with chicks. I think ours nest up north.

What family life. Looks lovely.

Lois 8. April 2009, 17:57

Thank you everyone!! It was wonderful to see the chicks. I had driven past them and just HAD to turn around and take pictures.

Adele 8. April 2009, 18:37

Awwww! Those must rank as some of the cutest photos I've ever seen on Opera! How utterly adorable!

Lois 8. April 2009, 22:43

Thanks so much Adele!! Even though they feed close to the road, they seem to be thriving! I haven't seen one hit by a car.

Keith Bates 8. April 2009, 23:06

These are great, Lois! Mommy and Daddy with babies, or two Mommies and their babies on a "play date"?

:D

Lois 9. April 2009, 22:41

Thanks Neil, I saw two more today, but no chicks with that pair.

Henry 10. April 2009, 07:08

I think you really work for National Geographic on the side... :D
Your wildlife photos around the area where you live are some of the best I've seen anywhere.

Here's a thought: is there a program where you could take a batch of photos and make them into screensavers? Something more dedicated than throwing a bunch of random pictures into your "My Pictures" folder and having Windows run it.

studio41 10. April 2009, 07:13

love the 'lines' in these! delightful...

and HAPPY EASTER, Lois!!

Lois 10. April 2009, 13:39

Thank you Henry, what an amazing compliment! I put the better photos that I've taken into a group called, "My 365" at
http://my.opera.com/365/albums/show.dml?id=670057
I normally save them to a file and put them into a slideshow on my electronic picture frame (gift from my daughter) or I can use them as a screensaver on the Mac. I don't know alot about windows, presumably if it works on the Mac, Windows must have something similiar.

Thank you Jill! HAPPY EASTER to you too!!

Henry 10. April 2009, 14:41

Well Lois, as you know, I always try to help. Wouldn't let you be in quandry about how to do something. A program for Windows that uses a nifty wizard to make a screensaver is PhotoMeister. Check it out at http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/PhotoMeister_Professional/photomeister.html

I've made a couple of them myself and works on all Windows OS from Win98 up. When done, copy the file with the '.scr' extension to the Windows folder. It will be available to use when you right-click on an open desktop, select 'Properties', select the 'Screensaver' tab and scroll through the list of available screensaver files. I'm sure many friends of your blog would be happy to get them as a gift from you.

And Happy Easter to you too! As the saying goes, "Friday's here...but Sunday's coming!!"

Lois 10. April 2009, 23:39

Amen!! I'll do that and plant it on my website! And have a wonderful and blessed Easter!!
Good Friday today - oh to think of the events so many years ago. Happy Easter to you and all yours.

Christine 18. April 2009, 14:15

These are such striking images Lois! You are so lucky to see sandhill cranes often. They are a rare sight here but are finally arriving from the south after a winter away. A friend of mine underwent cancer treatment several years ago. On a particularly bad day she lay down in the forest and after awhile saw a small flock of 5-6 sandhill cranes fly overhead. She was so overcome with emotion that she went home and started painting furiously. Painting after painting emerged, beautiful large oil paintings. It was quite an amazing thing. She has now recovered and still gets very emotional when they return each Spring.

Lois 20. April 2009, 10:33

Thank you! What a beautiful story. I'm sure the cranes will remain a very positive reminder all through her life.

Jaxs 22. April 2009, 19:31
