Birds and Manatees

, , , ,

Many pictures today, I'm afraid. Normally I get better pictures when I don't expect them. I wanted to try out my GPS today and ended up at the park. I hadn't even planned to leave the driveway.

I pulled over to read the GPS instruction manual and found this woodstork, first posing for me then taking a stroll down the avenue.

Then at the entrance to the park, this osprey family. They must get awfully wet up there in the rain.

I think the red thing in the nest is a plastic cup. I can't think why they would drag it all the way up there.

Then a couple of ibis' in a tree.

Then the real treat. I couldn't believe how close these manatees were to the shore. At times they actually had their heads up on the beach. I could easily have touched them. Here they are having a good splash!

It looked as if there were 3 adults and one baby. One of the adults left soon after I arrived, so I assume that the other two are the parents of the baby. The baby would grasp the mother with it's flippers from under her, but being in the shallows made that difficult, so mum obligingly would move into deeper water.

See the little flippers holding mum?

Baby

Love!

Some close ups.

Damage from a boat propeller. The area had numerous signs in the water for boats to go slow and watch for manatees, but some get damaged nevertheless. Very sad. Even the baby had some damage on it's nose.

And a red shouldered hawk to escort us back to the truck.

As always when I see the wildlife you happen to come across, I am flabbergasted.

Lois 5. June 2009, 18:24

Thanks so much Allan!!

AWESOME!

Lois: Wow!! Wonderful. You're so lucky to have all the variety of wildlife that you do. Great shots

These are so great! Have never seen a woodstord... ever.... and have only seen an Ibis in the zoo. I got to see Mannatees from afar when I was in Florida last year but these closeups really show what they look like. You can even see their little whiskers. The one with the baby's flippers holding on to mama is so adorable. I'll bet it was hard to leave with all this going on.

Thanks everyone! I wish I had brought the video camera. The manatees spashing in the water would have made a great video. I've only seen them from a long way away too. They usually congegrate at the electric company in Apollo Beach in winter where the warm water is put back into the gulf, but you really don't see much there.

Okay, that's it. I'm headed to a park this weekend!
Great shots, Lois.

What a wonderful series! The manatees are fascinating but seeing five ospreys at once (even if some of them are fledglings) is worth a star by itself :D

Yes, I've heard about the problems with boats and manatees. Sometimes it's other creatures too. You probably know about Luna, the orca who got into the habit of hanging around people in Gold River, not far from where I lived on Vancouver Island (though he was before my time there). People thought it was great fun to feed him all kinds of terrible things. Eventually he was hit and killed by a tugboat.

Neil 6. June 2009, 22:03

Photos of wild ospreys and storks wern't enough, you got photos of wild manatees too, and not only that, you have head and face shots too. Brilliant day out in my book!

Lois 6. June 2009, 22:36

Thanks! Adele - we have had so many problems with people feeding the animals. The worst has been alligators, there was a park somewhere in Florida and the people were having fun bouncing marshmellows off the nose of the alligators. Before long one person was attacked and nearly killed. I think education along these lines is taking effect though, we don't see or hear so much about things like that anymore.

Thanks Neil! And to think I wasn't even going out that day!

Marcus 7. June 2009, 00:23

Wow! How amazing to see those wonderful animals when you had no intention of leaving the driveway. Great pictures; thanks for sharing with us, Lois!

What great shots! So lovely. Wish I saw manatees when I was in Florida long ago. I saw alligators at the farm and one in the wild, birds, and a lizard.

Great shot Lois of the woodstork. They are on the endangered species list and you have brought a rare view for people to enjoy. We have a few woodstorks over here on the east coast. I see them around once in awhile.

Eliane a/k/a Elly 11. July 2009, 18:49

Lovely! Someday I will see a wild manatee I hope. Cool!

Guess what, Lois? An alligator is on the loose near here! Can you believe it, here in upper Indiana!

Lois 14. July 2009, 19:05

Thanks Mark!

Thanks Jackie, this little? guy lives in Sun City Center and is usually out in the mornings along the main street. If I'm out early enough I can get some shots of him.

Thanks Elly, WOW! That is amazing! In Indiana! How big is he?

An adult is all the paper says -- and that the fishermen were shouting and crying for help from their little rowboat to the police cruiser. lol
