Strange things today

,

Well, I came back tired, hot, achey muscels and sore feet, but I feel good!! I walked almost 8 miles through the woods, I started this morning at 9:30 and came back at 3pm. So.... it was a good walk.
The first butterfly is on a White Tupelo Gum Tree and he seemed to be getting a lot of nectar from it.

I'm not sure what kind of bug this is, but he's pretty ugly!

This is one of the more common butterflies, same as above I think, pretty!

Walking through the Woods

I wasn't sure I wanted to go today, at noon, it was a little late to see wildlife and hot as well, but I still found some interesting things. A Gopher Tortoise eating his lunch... Don't you think he's saying, "I'm EATING! Go away!! Stop taking pictures of me with my mouth full!"

And of course, the dragonflies...

And butterflies....

So far, a good day.

There's been good variety to the day today. I cleaned carpets (so what's new), but they look and smell very nice. I worked very hard because I wanted to go for a walk and got some minor surprises. I thought I was too late in the day to see anything good, but you never know what you will see and when.

Lots of butterflies (one might be a moth) and they actually cooperated with the camera today.

It looks like springtime is here in Florida. I think these buds will be palmetto bushes.

These two doves reminded me of two ladies that had been having a little conversation on the path, but now not really sure where they are.

Something tiny moved on the path in front of me. I'm glad I didn't step on him. I put a penny down for scale.
A little humor ended the walk. For the first time I saw trash in the park in the form of a business card. I turned it over and read the company name on it, "Quest Ecology". I brought it home and put it in my trash.
Then home to scrambled eggs and coffee. A little more tidying up and critter chores, then I'm going to sit back with a glass of lemonade and read my book!

Jacksonville, Florida

, , , ...

We had to go to Jacksonville yesterday on business, so I packed up the laptop, the dog, a bottle of water and off we went at 6am. We took the scenic route, what we spent in extra time, we made up for in mileage, so it worked out about the same as if we had taken the highway. We stopped for a biscuit and burrito for breakfast - I got the biscuit with fresh orange juice, Dog chose the burrito and finished the last of my juice.

We drove alongside the St. Johns River for awhile, then crossed it several times. I wish I had time to rent a kayak or canoe, I'm sure there were a lot of interesting things to see along the shoreline that were not visible from the road.

Along the way, there were a lot of very large pine forests, planted thickly so the trees would grow straight and crowd out any other trees. The are thinned out after a few years and the trees that are cut at that time are made into fence posts. The remainder are left to grow into telephone poles. We saw an abandoned pecan orchared with spanish moss hanging thickly from the trees - beautiful! And as we passed the national guard camp, I noticed a sign warning us that military manoeuvers might be taking place. Hmmmmmmm, should we have ducked? This was just after we saw the "Bear Crossing" sign. Needless to say, we drove a little faster through the area.

The day was not without education. I leared a lot about polished concrete used as countertops and flooring material. It was very interesting and looks like it would be quite cost effective as well as durable. I'm not sure I like it as a replacement for natural stone in houses. There is something so much more beautiful about granite and marble. On the other hand, I would be happy to see either one in my kitchen. At the moment, my countertops are yet uncut, leaning against the fence in the backyard. Ahhh, maybe someday!

Also got some cute butterfly pictures. I was concentrating and trying to get closer to the butterflies when I suddenly felt my foot slipping into this disgusting, pea soup-ish, gross pond. That was when I gave up on the butterflies and took pictures of the ducks instead - even saw a Canada Goose!

Anyway, the customer liked my work, so I came home happy.
