Good "Somethings"

Even after 17 years in Florida, it still seems funny to be Christmas-ing with the air conditioning on high in the truck. On the other hand, we had a couple of cold days last week and that didn't help me to get organized either, it was just inconvenient. So, today is warmer and I finished all the shopping - gifts, groceries... everything. Now, I'm going to put on the Christmas carols, sing along loudly :sing: (and very badly) and thoroughly enjoy the last of the getting ready. Best bet is either to get it done and the singing over with before the neighbors come home or make sure all the windows and doors are closed so no one hears me and calls 911 . I am a very, very, very bad singer, enthusiastic, but very bad.

I'm making a Yule Log, so definately wish me luck! I made them for several years when my kids were little and decorated them with marzipan mushrooms and leaves made of chocolate. I carefully washed the leaves and spread melted chocolate on them, pealed the leaves away and arranged the molded chocolate on top of the cake. I was married to a bozo who told everyone that the leaves were poisoned with bug spray and they shouldn't eat the cake. I was devistated. No one touched the cake I had spent so much time making. I had never used bug spray or any kind of spray on them, they were houseplants, so I knew they were safe and had been thoroughly washed anyway. So, I haven't made one for years, thinking that people may have believed that and might still think I would be dirty like that. Hopefully, they will either have gotten to know I wouldn't poison them or have forgotten about it altogether.

People in the shops must be getting tired, everyone seemed to be a little testy today. So I thought that since God really did make me a happy person I guess I should be spreading some happiness around. I talked to everyone, jovially wished them a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR and tried to make everyone's job a little easier. The response was surprisingly positive.

The lady at the hardware store was pretty miserable. They are closing the store and managed to find jobs for all the staff except her and she's been there 20 years. I told her something good, something very unexpected may well come of it. She immediately perked up and said that she really did believe that. Her philosophy was that there were "somethings" in everyone's life, sometimes little "somethings", sometimes medium sized, sometimes big "Somethings", but good things always seemed to come along when most needed. Even if it was just a visit from the little squirrel that lives in her palm tree coming into the store for peanuts, it was still a "something".

The rather bad tempered lady at the optician was complaining that the other helper called in sick. She eventually agreed that he was missing a lot of fun - the last few days having happy times with co-workers before Christmas was definatly better than staying home alone.

It's so sad to think, that at this wonderful time of year, in the midst of so much happiness people are stressed, unhappy, tired, underpaid and overworked.

So people.... if you are any of those things, light a smelly candle tonight, sing some songs like "Away in the Manger", "Silent Night", and "Joy to the World" and try to enjoy the reason for the season. Maybe one of that lady's "Somethings" will pay you a visit!

Guess what Furbee wants. Now guess again, and again, and again.Elf Yourself

I am kinda giggling at how you describe your singing.
You know..if you enjoy it..why not? Belt it out! :sing:
Anyhow..it is a bit sad when people get all stressed out over Christmas.
I think it makes God sad too. Jesus came to bring peace to earth. It is amazing to me at how materialistic every holiday is becoming.

Anyhow..I am glad you were able to be an encouragement to that lady at the hardware store.
Amen to your last paragraph!

Oh ya...I am really sorry about your experience with that Christmas Yule log years ago. :frown:
I am interested in using that technique for fondant leaves!

I'm a pretty introverted person but I learned a few years ago that smiling at shop assistants brightens everyone for at least a few seconds. Looking towards a 50th birthday next year, it makes me feel good when a pretty girl smiles back at me.

Even in Narrabri, it gets a little rushed at this time of the year. Sometimes you have to park half a block away from the shop you want to go into. And at the little secondary post office just at the other end of my street, you may have to wait for as many as two people ahead of you to get served

December this year has been relatively cool and WET. Today there are flood warnings for several rivers in New South Wales. We've gone from drought to floods- praise God!

My mother told me many years ago I was no singer but, as usual, I never listened. Jim was about three years old and sitting on my knee as we were driving home and I just HAD to sing. His little hand came up over my mouth as he said, "No sing, Mommy." I listened.

Have to admit, as much as I love the Lord and appreciate His Christmas Gift, I have been finding Christmas each year increasingly difficult to cope with. I used to say one had to have lots of money and lots of energy to be able to enjoy Christmas but maybe that's just a cop out for what is to me a depressing time of year. I think I just can't stand all that over-the-top cheerfulness, I'd rather have the peace and good will all through the year.

Thanks Marie, I think that is very true. Christmas has become such a big deal and not in the right way at all. Peace and goodwill are the most important things - not decorations, too much food and expensive gifts.

We were just talking about it this morning, that instead of putting thought into a small and inexpensive gift, people tend to go out with the idea that they have to spend a specific amount on each person - so find a gift that matches the amount.

Cheryl, the leaves are really easy to do. In Canada I used philadendron leaves because they were handy, this year I'm using ficus because that seems to be the most promising. Whatever you use, it should be tough and not fragile. I melt the chocolate - I use chocolate disks from the candy store, but I think a melted candy bar would be equally good.
Wash the leaves top and bottom with soap and water, rinse carefully  so no one thinks they are poisoned!! Then paint the melted chocolate on one side only and refrigerate or put in the freezer until hard. Don't let even a little chocolate get on the wrong side or it will be hard to get the leaf off. Peel the leaf away - I never was successful using them more than once, they look OK, but don't seem to hold up a second time. Store carefully or put on the cake immediately.
I learned the technique at church when we had a lady come and demonstrate how to make molded chocolates. There is just an amazing amount of stuff you can do with chocolate - my kids' favorite was mixing peanut butter with powdered sugar, rolling into balls or whatever shape, then dip in melted chocolate. Wonderful treat!

Update on the lady in the hardware store - I was telling Arthur about it and he suggested I pay her another visit and offer to make her a resume. Also he has a friend whose wife works at a large store in the area and he thinks they may be able to hire her there. She's not a young woman and that may make things harder for her, but maybe this will be her "something".
