I've just realised, that's wrong. It says I'm using IE6...
You used to be able to get Opera to identify itself as other browsers in order to access certain badly written web pages, but I can't find that option on here now so I have no idea why I'm being mis-identified.
There is a section of the toolbar just to the right of the Google search box (well that is where it is on mine)... it says "Identify as..." click on that and it toggles through the options.
Click on the View menu at the very top of the window. Then click on Toolbars, then select Customize. Click on the "buttons" tab. Then you will have a whole bunch of menu option open up. Select "Preferences" Click on the little bar that says "Identify as Opera" and drag it onto whatever toolbar you want it to be on. Close the dialogs, then click on the"Identify as Opera" button and it will change to "Identify as Firefox". Click again and it becomes "Identify as Internet Explorer". Once more and you are back to "Identify as Opera." Very handy for sites which try to refuse entry to Opera, or which only work for IE.
That was all going swimmingly until I reached the line "Click on the little bar that says "Identify as Opera" and drag it onto whatever toolbar you want it to be on." The bar says 'Identify as Internet Explorer' and it appears to be jammed on that. I can't change it and neither can I drag it onto a toolbar, I just get a No Entry sign that flies right back to the 'Appearance' box as soon as I release it. All the other tabs work fine, it's just the 'buttons' tab that's frozen.
Deke, I had a similar thing when I tried to do it. I found that I was able to get it somewhere onto the address bar, though. It hasn't come up as a button that alternates between the browsers, though. It gives a drop down with 3 listed.
I thought I'd cracked it. After I downloaded the latest version of Firefox I was able to switch to 'Opera' in the Opera browser. I have no idea why this should have happened or if the two are connected but right up to this point Opera was identifying itself correctly. Then I came to this page to read your post and it's locked into IE6 again...
I think it's that doohickey up there that's doing it... ):
Cracked it! Thanks to the forum Keith pointed me to, some guy who understands what's going on under the hood of Opera gave me a fix. And as a bonus the 'Identify as...' menu has appeared on my taskbar all by itself.

My version of Opera is faulty. I'm taking it back for a refund.

I would recommend that you describe this problem at the Opera forums.

It is possibly a bug or else there is some weird setting known only to a few select people who sit in dark caves huddled over keyboards
