Korean AND Japanese (AND CHINESE!) Input in WM6 (and WM5): The Complete Guide
Thursday, 10. January 2008, 03:28:45
Notice: Chinese IME can now also be enabled! Download the enabler file from here or here.Okay, ever since I bought my Dell Axim I've been trying to get Korean and Japanese inputs running at the same time. About a month after searching for a solution with no luck, I decided to take matters into my own hands and start experimenting.
Here's what you'll need to enable Korean And Japanese (and English of course) input on your WM6/WM5 device (if using a QVGA (320x240) device, use alternates when given in italics):
IME_31J_F.cab (from IME_31J_F.zip) IME_31J_QVGA_F.cab / IME_31J_QVGA_F.zip
Kor_IME_VGA.cab (from Kor_IME_VGA.zip) Kor_IME_QVGA.cab / Kor_IME_QVGA.zip
ChinaFEP_No5en.cab (from ChinaFEP_No5en.zip)
korechithai.cab (from korechithai.zip)
2_Enable_IME_2.cab (from Enable_IME.zip)
2_Enable_IME_3.cab (from Enable_IME.zip)
Alternatively, you can download a complete package from here to save time.
Here's how to do it:
1. You need WM5 or WM6, but I suggest that if you're using WM2003 or WM5 that you upgrade to WM6. Also ensure that you have around 20MB free storage space on both SD card/CF card and device storage.
2. Have some backup nb0 and crc files ready (stick them in the root of your SD card) just incase you run into trouble (if using a Dell Axim) -- not required but STRONGLY recommended.
3. Unzip all the cab files into one directory (preferably \SD Card\IME_Files\)
4. Install korechithai.cab to "Device"
5. Soft Reset
6. Install Kor_IME_VGA.cab to "Device" -- This installs the Korean IME
7. DO NOT RESET!
8. Install ChinaFEP_No5en.cab to "Device" -- This installs the Chinese IME
9. DO NOT RESET!
10. Install IME_31J_F.cab to "Device" -- This installs the Japanese IME
11. Do NOT RESET!
12. Install 2_Enable_IME_2.cab and 2_Enable_IME_3.cab to "Device"
13. Soft reset...ah, finished
Notes: It is essential that you install the Korean IME (and/or Chinese IME) cab first. If you accidentally install the Japanese one first, just reinstall Japanese one again after you have installed the Korean/Chinese one.
About the English/Japanese/Korean/Chinese IME
If all goes well, you should see TWELVE (or NINE) different Input options which you can choose from (see below link for image). They are:
Block Recognizer - I never use this one -- to be honest I don't understand what it is.
Kana - A Japanese Kana keyboard -- I rarely use this one
Kensaku - One of my favourites, handwritten character recognition for Japanese -- Great for Kanji!
Keyboard - Boring old english keyboard -- Please don't use this, use Romaji instead.
Kor_Keyboard - The Korean Keyboard -- This DOES NOT WORK using the above instructions, but it's a very small price to pay because of...
Kor_Writer - Korean handwriting recognition! -- This is works fantastically, I love it
Letter Recognizer - English handwriting recognition -- It's actually pretty cool, but you could also use Kor_Writer or Tegaki if you wanted to.
Romaji - Japanese Romaji keyboard -- If typing in English OR Japanese, USE THIS!
Tegaki - Japanese Handwriting recognition -- Rarely use this, it's similar to Kensaku.
All of the Chinese inputs are decent:
Chinese Serch - Search for individual characters -- Very similar to the Japanese Kensaku.
Chinese Writing - Handwriting input -- This is quicker to use than the search but it's not as accurate.
Ping Ying -- Pinyin Chinese input -- I love this ^^
Click here to see the different layouts (excluding Chinese layouts).
A HUUUUUUUUGE thanks goes out to Asukal and Leies for the files they have released.
감사합니다! ありがとうございました!
Using Resco Registry Editor, you can import this file which will rename all of the layouts according to the image to the left and will also disable Block Recognizer, Kana,Keyboard, Kor_Keyboard as they are unnecessary (and also can cause errors if used) in my opinion.

Hey there,
I've been looking all over for the IME. Much appreciate for your dedicated effort and amazing job. I have a question regards to QVGA set up. I currently have an unlocked WM5 Treo, but the unit's screen size is 240x240 screen. What sort of issues will I run into if I'm to install it on 240x240 screen unit?
Regards,
Steve
Cameron | 亀倫 | 카메론 # 6. March 2008, 08:22
QVGA eh, well first off you'll need to use the QVGA files. I think I've seen this working on a 240x240 PDA before. Just to be safe, do some research onto how to backup and restore the OS on the Treo, WM5 is incredibly unstable and one slight glitch can stop the whole thing from even booting.
If the IME you install is not made for the screen type you have, the IME will simply display incorrectly or will not work properly. It's not a big deal really.
I cannot guarantee that installing the IMEs will work. I can only make a guarantee with the Dell Axim X50v. Sorry bout that, but I only have 1 PDA.
In the beginning I didn't know that this was gonna work, to my knowledge I'm the first person to try and get the IME's running together on an Axim X50v running WM6, probably because I took a lot of chances, and even "bricked" my Axim a few times. Then realised it's a pretty hard device to actually brick; whenever you screw up the system you can always restore it from the SD card, super convenient.
I'd like to look into this for you but I'm so busy at the moment. See if any other Treo users have gotten other IMEs (any language other than English) running on theirs.
Good luck,
Cameron

I've been searching for some great chinese ime and I finally found 1 here!! Thanks!!
But I would also like to know, do you know any chinese ime which is for traditional chinese? Coz' the one that you provide is simplified chinese... and I don't really like to install CE Star.
Thanks for your information on the input anyway!!
Cameron | 亀倫 | 카메론 # 26. March 2008, 14:17
Yeah don't bother with CE Star, they were a great company and did great things but they are no longer needed.
I can't remember exactly where I downloaded it from, but I have the Traditional Chinese installer on my Axim right now. The file you need is called "CHT_IME_VGA_F.cab", I have done a search on google but I could not find the file, maybe you can. Anyway I will upload it and post a link to it ASAP. If you need to install the Chinese fonts, look for a file called Korechithai.cab, it can be foung inside this archive.
After installing, you will have:
"Changjie" -- ...Hanzi particles keyboard??
"CHT Full Screen" -- This is cool! None of the other IME's have this feature, you can write on the screen with it.
"CHT Write" -- Chinese handwriting recognition
"Chu On" -- Taiwanese (Traditional) phonetic keyboard
Maybe I'll switch to Traditional now ^^
UPDATE: Download CHT_IME_VGA_F.cab from here.
As always, a huge thanks to ASUKAL for making this all possible.

WTF??? The CHT_IME_VGA_F.cab link above is dead??? Where can I get it from then? Will it work on QVGA? If not then forget it. At least ChinaFEP_No5 works on my Treo 700wx, although it displays characters in the IME area at a very small point size (8pt???) when it should be doing so at [at least] 12pt (my Chinese font is Microsoft JhengHei from Windows Vista!). Where can I email you a snapshot of my Treo screen that shows how ridiculously small ChinaFEP_No5 displays characters on Chinese Serch [and Ping Ying too!]?

Treo 700wx users:
PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL korechithai.cab INTO YOUR DEVICE!!!
Doing so will disable your Treo's physical keyboard (including the arrow keys and soft keys). It will also disable the power button's phone-on/off feature. This happens with all CABs sourced directly from Asukal. Instead, to display CJK on your Treo, simply copy one good CJK font from your computer (provided that you don't exhaust your internal memory) to your Treo's \Windows folder and then use Resco Registry Editor or PHM RegEdit to manually edit the registry to enable font linking and link your CJK font to your default system font. A search on Google can get you procedures on what registry keys to modify in order to enable CJK display.
Cameron | 亀倫 | 카메론 # 1. April 2008, 02:44
Which CJK font would you recommend? The one provided in Korechithai is the smallest CJK font I have come across. And by CJK I mean Chinese (simp, trad) + Japanese (hiragana, katakana, kanji) + Korean (Hangeul).
Please download the China CAB file from here:
VGA: http://users.on.net/~drneale/imefiles/CHT_IME_VGA.zip
QVGA: http://hn801.hkes.com/Data/SIP/CHT_IME_QVGA_F.zip
Sorry bout that.
About the QVGA files,
Anonymous # 11. April 2008, 22:51
I have install all the files as suggested, it works fine but the problem is can't use any of the input keyboard, eg. Korean, and Japanese. will not appear and cannot use. Any Idea to Solve this, Thanks
Anonymous # 11. April 2008, 22:54
Sorry forgot to mention, i am using OKTA Touch running WM6, only the inout keyboard for Japanese and Korean Not working,
Thanks
Cameron | 亀倫 | 카메론 # 12. April 2008, 01:13
If you've followed all the directions perfectly, the only thing I can suggest is to try installing Japanese again. If you want to write in Korean, use the Kor_Writer, it works really well.

Terrific job Cameron!
Has anyone successfully installed the Chinese, Korean and Japanese Fonts along with handwriting recognition on the HTC Touch Cruise?
If so, it would be awesome if you could post the steps on how to do it.
Cheers

Hi, first it is really a very good work. I have find a lot of web site at last I find this one to help me to install Korean Input!!! But there are some problem after following your step. I am using LS20 with WM6.0. After follow all the step, I can read Korean and input korean but no for sending message. It can input but cannot display what I have input. Second, the backspace do not function. Can you suggest any solution for this?
PS: For the CJK font I have install the D_ChineseSupportDroidOnly.cab. It is good and file size is small.

Hi Cameron
thanks for all your work on this site. I have a Dell Axim x50V, where do I find the nb0 and crc files? I have looked everywhere but cannot seem to find them.
Many thanks
Rod

For WM6 and X50v, download here.
I hope this helps

Hi Cameron,
Good job!
I just installed the things following your instructions on HTC Touch Elf. Some feedback for you and the others.
Korechithai.cab caused all kinds of troubles so I used D_ChineseSupportDroidOnly.cab instead.
After the installation everything displays fine and works in every application (unlike EFFY which did not allow any input e-mails and texting). However, after syncronization Asian text in tasks, calendar etc. do not appear on the desktop computer, only question marks show up. Any idea what could be the problem? Asian text coming from the PC is displayed fine, but not the other way around.
A less important question: how can I remove the unwanted input methods from the list (others than that you mentioned above)? I can't locate them in the registry.
Anonymous # 25. January 2009, 13:47
Sorry, forget the last question. I figured it out from your registry fix file.
Anonymous # 31. January 2009, 04:41
After several times of Hard and soft reset and surfing on the net, it seems that CJK(T) by this method will disable the physical keyboard(Sony Ericsson X1 and Treo 700wx), so i finally give up and use CEStar.
Btw, i found the CHT_IME_VGA_F.zip here:

Leroy (well, maybe it's a bit late for you but for other treo etc. users):
To enable hardware keyboards disabled by any of the CABs, make the following registry change after installing the CAB:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Layouts\e0010411]
“Keyboard Layout”=”00000409″
And Leroy, when someone's spent his time trying to help you and others by posting free information, it's not polite to "WTF" them and get all petulant if a link goes out of date or something else doesn't quite work out for you. Social skills: they're not just for breakfast anymore.
