Background
Pamplona (Basque: Irunea / Iruñea) is the capital city of Navarre, Spain. It has a population of 171,150, and is 92 kilometres from the town of San Sebastián, and 407 kilometres from Madrid. Pamplona is famous for the San Fermín festival, in July 7, also known as The running of the bulls or encierro. Ernest Hemingway made Pamplona famous and was duly rewarded for it by having a street named after him, Avenida de Hemingway
Analysis of Pamplona
Pamplona, not only presents us a scenario of the thrilling bullfight, the ardent aficionados as well as hospitable people in Pamplona, but also implies us in Americans’ reaction to the trauma of the war, both physical and psychic, from the almost unbelievable consumption of alcohol by the veterans and their compulsive traveling from place to place, to Brett’s sexual promiscuity If the Great War hadn’t happened, we are meant to understand, these characters would be doing very different things.
1.Bullfighting
“Each time he let the bull pass so close that the man and the bull and the cape . . . were all one sharply etched mass. It was all so slow and so controlled. It was as though he were rocking the bull to sleep.”
“. . . the sword went in, and for just an instant he and the bull were one, Romero way out over the bull. . . . Then the figure was broken. The was a little jolt as Romero came clear. . . .”.
Nearly every episode involving bulls or bullfighting parallels an episode that will happen among Jake and his friends. On the other hand, the language in describing bullfighting is a symbolic equation of sex and violence which links sexuality to danger and destruction.
2.Aficionados
An aficionado is one who is passionate about the bull-fights.

Montoya could forgive anything of a bull-fighter who had aficion.
3.the Feature of Local life
The fiesta of San Fermin, which will last for seven days, begins at noon on a Sunday. Musicians and dancers fill the streets—and even some of the shops, like the wine store, where Brett is placed on a cask so the Basque peasants can dance around her as if she is an idol.
“All for sport, all for pleasure,” the café owner says ruefully to Jake.

“We are the foreigners”
The fiesta was really started. It kept up day and night for seven days. The dancing kept up, the drinking kept up, the noise went on. The things that happened could only have happened during a fiesta. Everything became quite unreal finally and it seemed as thought nothing could have any consequences. It seemed out of place to think of consequences during the fiesta. All during the fiesta you had the feeling, even when it was quiet, that you had to shout any remark to make it heard. It was the same feeling about any action. It was a fiesta and it went on for seven days.
Pamplona is a city in the North of Spain, home to the festival of San Fermin and the animal bullfight. Hemingway, through his vivid description of Pamplona, not only presents us a scenario of the thrilling bullfight, the ardent aficionados as well as hospitable people in Pamplona, but also implies us in Americans’ reaction to the trauma of the war, both physical and psychic, from the almost unbelievable consumption of alcohol by the veterans and their compulsive traveling from place to place, to Brett’s sexual promiscuity If the Great War hadn’t happened, we are meant to understand, these characters would be doing very different things.
Pamplona serves as a kind of anti-Paris, semi-rural and organic where the City of Light is urban and decadent. The woods outside Burguete where Jake and Bill fish for trout are even more different from Paris, and the sense of tranquility that the fishing trip creates is sharply different from the freneticism of the novel’s opening chapters.
Bullfighting
The description on Bullfighting seemingly is brutal and thrilling, yet it is rich in symbolic possibilities. In fact, nearly every episode involving bulls or bullfighting parallels an episode that will happen among Jake and his friends. For instance, The killing of the steer by the bull may prefigure Mike’s assault on Cohn. Alternatively, we can read this incident as prefiguring Brett’s destruction of Cohn and his values. On the other hand, the language Hemingway uses to describe Romero’s bullfighting is almost always sexual, and his killing of the bull takes the form of a seduction. This symbolic equation of sex and violence further links sexuality to danger and destruction.
Aficionados
An aficionado is one who is passionate about the bull-fights and Aficionados are the prominent features of Pamplona in a sense. They are straight-forwarded, friendly and generous with less-money-oriented mind. Montoya could forgive anything if they are aficionados, Montoya is aficionado, so are Romero and Belmonte. Here we can assume Cohn is not welcome, partly becoz he is far cry from those aficionados in nature and value-attitudes.
The Feature of Local life
Also we could get a glimpse of the features of people in Pamplona. Namely most of them are Basques, who are fiercely independent, and this may partially explain the attraction of the region to Jake, Brett, and the others; it is a place apart from the rest of Europe.
The Basques are known for being Inventive, eccentric, and fanatically independent, who stand in sharp contrast to the followers of fashion we encountered in Paris.
Moreover, Local people’s hospitality and reverence to foreigners can be clearly revealed when the Basque peasants insists in dancing around Brett as if she is an idol and those Aficionados readily treat Foreigners like Jake, Bill with beers.
Implication of this fiesta---lost generation
Also the Characters’ activities in Pamplona described by Hemingway gives us an implication of what the lost generation think and look like.
6th of July—Since the two days prior to the fiesta are described by Jake as having been “quiet,” we can assume that American Independence Day went more or less unobserved by him, Bill, and Cohn—not surprisingly, considering the alienation they appear to feel from their homeland.
As Bill says to Cohn, “We are the foreigners”—meaning that they are foreigners in Spain. But the expatriates of the 1920s were foreigners in their own homelands, as well.
World War I undercut traditional notions f morality, faith and justice. No longer able to rely on the traditional beliefs that gave life meaning, the men and women who experienced the war became psychologically and morally lost, and they wandered aimlessly in a world that appeared meaningless, they fill their time with inconsequential and escaptist activities, such drinking, dancing and debauchery.
Cathedrals
The inside-outside theme is reiterated in Chapter XIV when Jake tells us that he “went to church a couple of times, once with Brett.” Brett asks to accompany Jake to confessional, and he tells her “it would be in a language she did not know”—meaning Spanish, of course. But Jake also means that Brett, as an outsider to Catholicism, can never truly understand the very notion of confession.
