There is an app for the iPhone that I recently discovered called Distant Shore. You are stranded on a seemingly deserted island. You are looking top down at yourself but you can’t see yourself, only your footprints in the sand. You walk along the beach looking for shells. Once you discover five shells you are awarded an empty bottle. Now the fun begins. With this bottle you can insert a note that you create to say anything you want. Put the not inside the bottle and toss it into the ocean. Your bottle will end up on someone else’s beach anywhere in the world. Whoever finds your bottle can respond to your note and suddenly you have a dialog with this strange person.
While walking along your beach looking for shells occasionally you will find bottles as well. Open them up and read the note inside and respond if you like. People from all over the world are playing this game and it is so interesting to find out where people are from.
Of course with this type of medium there are bound to be abusers but this application comes with a reporting feature that will punish the abuser by not allowing bottles to wash up on their beach and therefore stopping the culprit from further annoying others. I have yet to come across any idiocy in this game and have had a great time exchanging notes with all sorts of people from around the world.
I would definitely recommend this game to anyone of all ages. At the time I downloaded the game it was 99 cents. Not bad for a game with potential endless enjoyment.
