Boxing Day

Boxing Day

The day after Christmas, the Feast of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is better known as Boxing Day. The term may come from the opening of church poor boxes that day; maybe from the earthenware boxes with which boy apprentices collected money at the doors of their masters' clients.

Nowadays, we often see, in certain families, gifts (boxes) given to those who provide services throughout the year.

"Boxing Day" is listed in the Canada Labour Code as a holiday.

Christmas Eve 2006 - Hungry Ghost

Christmas Eve between 6:55 and 7:00pm - We had a latish dinner. More details on my blog in a day or so. In any event around the specified time, vegetables were being prepared for roasting. So just before this sequence of pictures, CA, under the supervision of DW2 was busy cutting up vegetables.

Then the chopped up veggies (carrots, onions, peppers, beets) were poured into a pan with extra-extra-extra virgin olive oil, secret herbs that ML and DW2 can't tell us about or they'd have to kill us, were added. CA was told to scrub his fingers well and to toss the vegetables, in a Nigella Lawson manner, but without the undulating or ululating. Once tossed, DW2 snatched the pan, and spread out the vegetables on a roasting pan. Once spread out, CA was told to move certain pieces to obtain the correct degree of spread that satisfied DW2's high aesthetic standards. Finally, a rigorous inspection by the master chef, DW2, before the pan was placed in the oven.

And that was what happened Christmas Eve around 7 pm in Hungry's little life.

Christmas Eve at my house..Ontario, Canada

I apologize because I forgot my camera...and at 7 pm...we were still in church. This was taken at our house later on..by my dad, as I was holding the cake.
It was my husband's birthday.
There were a couple of families over to celebrate with us as well. Annually we put out cheese, crackers, dips, chips, pickles (a few varieties)..chocolates, and the list goes on.

A quiet Christmas Eve, anticipating tomorrow. The presents are wrapped, the tree is lit, and table is laid  Taken at 7pm GMT.

Guess I'm first

I just went out to check that the lights were working before I got ready to go to "midnight" mass down in the village.
