Writer writes article. Someone reads it. It involves technology, so they write a short paragraph about the article, which may or may not be an accurate summary. Slashdot readers go into overdrive after reading the summary, ignoring the link to the original article. For a bunch of guys who think they are smarter than "sheeple", they don't show it.
Here is an excellent example: "US Government Developed the IPod." The thread is dominated by Bush-bashing, although the article does not claim that the government developed the iPod. It says that basic research, done for other purposes, provided the technology which was necessary to create the iPod.
Expect this to be the counter-poinnt to the "Al Gore invented the internet" meme.
