Mens fedora hats are the types constructed from felt and have a crease across the crown length which is pinched towards the front on both sides. When Hollywood films around 1940 began using the hat as an accessory for such roles as private investigator, or other gangster type perceived roles.Indeed, it was also used in films throughout the fifties with no finer example than Gene Kelly in the hit film musical 'Singin' in the Rain'.

A frequent accompaniment to the Fedora was the Trench coat and became a bit of a uniform - one of the best examples of this being the character played by Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. Other actors to have worn this iconic piece of headwear include John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd in the Blues Brothers; Robert Eglund as Freddy Kruger in the Nightmare on Elm Street films and latterly, Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. The fedora is also linked to the genre of film noir.

The Fedora began to lose its appeal by the late 1950s, particularly on the west coast of the United States, which is known for more casual dress mode. The transition from wide to narrow lapels resulted in similar narrower brimmed hats making the fedora a outdated fashion accessory. Another element that led to its demise was the production of smaller cars that made the drive when wearing a hat more difficult.

By the middle of the 1970's, the hat was only being sported by either older men or traditionalists but virtually dead as a fashion piece. A small revival was started in the 1980's by Michael Jackson utilizing black and white types in some performances while other notable wearers of mens fedora hats today range from the fantasy novelist Terry Pratchett and Tom Landry, head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
