Type 'volunteer tours' or 'volunteer travel' into Google and you will find literally thousands of websites detailing volunteer programs that you can sign-up for. These projects are extremely varied, ranging from conservation work to humanitarian assistance to cultural exposure, and just about anything else you could think of in between.
The cost of these programs is equally varied, though typically about $700-800 a month. Programs involving wildlife are usually a little more expensive, as they start at $1000 for one month, though there is the added bonus of potentially getting a qualification on completion of it. On the other hand, you could volunteer on a humanitarian project in India or Africa for just $500 a month.
Your accommodation will vary based on the type of project being undertaken and, as with the majority of tourism activities, generally, the more you pay, the better the facilities will be. There are unique opportunities to stay with local communities, living their life and eating their food. Alternatively, you could sleep outdoors, or in the wilderness, a humbling but immensely rewarding experience.
A typical program or project lasts for about a month, but many companies can fit you in for a reduced duration if you are unable to offer a commitment for that long. You can, of course, also stay for a longer duration, though there is normally a limit of a few months, especially on social or humanitarian type projects.
You should endeavor to acquire as much information as you can about any volunteer organizations which interests you. The first stop should be their website, to evaluate their mission statement and ethics policy. A secondary means of obtaining information about a particular organization is via referrals, either sourced by you, or provided by the organization themselves. Volunteer or travel forums / blogs being ideal sources of unbiased information.
