This unique chemical reaction is called chemoluminescence. And the speed of this reaction is affected by temperature significantly. Glow sticks of common size is normally a plastic cylindrical stick of four or six inches long and 10 or 15 millimeters wide. An interesting fact is that you can generally tell the color of a glow stick before activating except blue and white. They both appear white before being activated. The clear stick contains two chemical elements in two different sections. The inner compartment is a fragile glass ampoule containing one chemical and out side of it is the other chemical liquid. This is why light sticks should not be bended before ready to use.

The 4" and 6" long light sticks are usually quite thick and can only be bended slightly but longer ones such as 8" glow bracelets and 22" glow necklaces are much slimmer so can be bended 360 degrees. Glow sticks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from as short as 1.5" to as long as 24". They last from 8 to 12 hours and they come in various colors such as green, red, blue, purple, yellow, orange and white.

It's a lot of fun to be creative and using light sticks for decoration is a creative idea. They are also many other applications. Using glow sticks instead of candles for instance will add a cool light effect.

Glow sticks products work best in very dark setting, where the glow appears most significant. One of these occasions is a highlighter party, where only black lights are used. People must wear white T-shirts for highlighters to write on. The cool lights of light sticks are wonderful for highlighter parties.
