One movie that won over the box office in 2001, to everyones surprise was The Princess Diaries which made a mindboggling $100 million. Viewers embraced Ann Hathaways character Mia who starts off as a clumsy ugly-duckling but ends up discovering shes a princess and transforming into an attractive teen with help from her doting grandmother Queen Clarisse (played by Julie Andrews). The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement movie picks up the thread of Mias life close to six years on with her graduating from college in America and going back to Genovia. As she approaches her 21st birthday, grandma Clarisse decides its time to make the princess a Queen. Problems arise when Viscount Mabrey, played by Jonathan Rhys-Davies, starts asserting that his nephew is the next in line for the throne and the parliament decides to adhere to an old decree which forbids a Queen to take the throne without a husband.

The clumsy princess is left with just one month to find herself a suitable husband, while constantly working to win over the loyalty and love of the Genovians and simultaneously dealing with the predatory paparazzi. Complicating matters further is the princess growing attraction toward the very nephew who threatens to take over the throne, Nicholas (Chris Pine). The addition of a perfect candidate for the role of consort in the form of an Englishman (Callum Blue) makes it harder still for Mia to decide between the love of her life and the love of her country.

Anna Hathaway effortlessly continues in her portrayal of Mia while Julie Andrews has the audience captured with her stunning appeal. Gary Marshall, the director and the original cast have worked hard and successfully created a light movie thats romantic with enough comedy to help you forget about everyday pressures and cares.

Both women and men will enjoy this movie though the latter might find it goes against their macho image to admit it. Mias character though a princess isnt one that furthers the traditional image of a woman who needs rescuing. Shes a modern woman who makes up her mind independently and doesnt look to a man to rescue her from tough situations.
