Opera 9.5 Survival Guide

,

Some of my friends and me, are affected by the changes in Opera 9.5. I was expecting its release with great anticipation. When I downloaded and installed it, I said "OK, it is faster but what else..." I read the change log. It has many features but some changes that will force me to change the way I browse the web. Since I am too lazy or too used to the way I use my PC, I do not want any changes. In this piece of text I will write the way to get back usage of 9.2x with all the new features.
  • First thing I noticed is the missing panel toggle at left. It can be opened from Tools > Apperance > Panels > Show panel toggle at the edge of the window
  • Small size icons for panel. Tools > Apperance > Toolbars, then select the panel chooser and set "Style" to "Images and Text Below" option.
  • Shortcuts, I found that I use Ctrl+B (paste and go) and Ctrl+F3 (View source, my job is to create web based applications) too much. So I reverted to Opera 9.2 shortcuts
  • The new skin is too dark for me, so I continued with Fresh
  • Two of the widgets I use seems broken, Mindpad (deformed) and Smart Programmer's Widget (deformed, cannot open search pages). Hopefully gcampos and I will fix them soon
  • For the missing Shell Menu, I use GNU/Linux (Fedora 8) at work and it did not have a shell menu even before the Opera 9.5, so I dont miss anything

I will also list the things I liked most. First of all improved email client. I use Opera as mail client and I was happy with it. Searching is easy and helpful, but newer version seems to work faster and and seeing email title with the notification window really helps. Second improvement I noticed is speed. Although Opera 9.2x was unbeatable with its speed, 9.5 is even faster. History search is also nice. Browsing many sites a day, you can easily forgot the page you visited yesterday. And for the last, Dragonfly. We were using FireFox+FireBug to debug our web applications. It is too hard to debug AJAX enabled dynamic web pages without such a tool. However, Dragonfly is missing the ability to display HTTP requests. As I read it will be available for the release version.

Have nice day,
Cem Kalyoncu
