Trying to cook a meal a week can be hard when travelling...
Since the book thing was going so well (until I got stuck into my big trashy novel from the bus stop) I figured I should also make a serious effort to cook at least one meal a week. It seems silly, but in my job I am very often on the road for weeks at a time, and home very little. Eventually eating out all the time gets to me and I want to cook, and to eat something that doesn't have a restaurant price or a cheap take-away lack of fresh veggies next to it.
I haven't managed it for a few weeks, but this week I got there. I moved from a backpackers' hostel that was really cheap to one that had a kitchenette in the room. The price was about 3 times as much (although still very cheap by business travel standards). But while I had a kitchen I am allowed to use after 10pm (I tend to eat late) there was nobody in my room but me, an no social area except the garden.
In the end it is hard to say what I prefer. Cooking for myself isn't something I really enjoy - cooking is for sharing.
But this week I needed to cook something. With one hotplate, and a generally limited set of facilities, I managed loin chops in rum sauce (I had some rum, and was never going to drink much of it), with onions, mushrooms, and broccoli. Eating under an umbrella in the rain outside wasn't the greatest dinner, but it wasn't bad either. And at least I managed to cook a proper meal this week. Let's see what next week holds...
You can come over and cook in my kitchen next time you are in The Netherlands!
