Shiny toys and sunny places

, , ,

We released a new experimental build recently. So I got to write the release notes for the first time  It does some advanced standards stuff, and showcases some stuff we think is pretty useful and hope will become standardised.

And now I am in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. I didn't manage to learn enough Russian to speak it on this trip (I did manage about 2/3 of what I hoped to do, which is about three times as much as I expected). But I did demonstrate the new toys in my talk (to go online as soon as I clean up the bits that link to wierd parts of my filesystem), and they all ran nicely

Also, I have never been to Kyrgyzstan. First new country this year... with the second coming up in a couple of weeks.

I'm in Bishkek because Opera sponsored BarCamp Central Asia. So I got to come and give a talk about standards. To make it more interesting, I used our new experimental build to talk about standards for video, (Yay - Firefox is implementing Ogg too!), and graphics - canvas and 3D experiments, SVG, and even dear old PNG (and APNG). Maybe tomorrow I will do a 20/Twenty or lightning talk on Dragonfly, but it depends on what gets into the schedule.

It's been good to be here. I don't speak enough Russian to understand most of what is going on, but from time to time I go to a session and try to understand something... It is a very well-organised BarCamp - they got good sponsorship to cover the bar bit and have a flexible approach to the schedule that actually works - about 300 people are wandering around 3 full tracks, and there is also free wifi that works as we wander around...

Bishkek itself is a nice place. Huge open sqaures of concrete for the government centre, and pretty much everywhere else there are trees. Important in summer, because the temperature here is in the mid to high 30s every day this week (when we arrived it was about 30, and that was 5am). The food here is good, the people are friendly, and it is pretty relaxed. (Of course, at 35ºC it should be...)

We have a couple more days here, to see what we can, do some more BarCamping, see if we can find some souvenirs (I am hopeless at buying souvenirs usually - a couple of magnets or postcards in the airport and I think I am doing a good job), and so on. And then ten hours spent sitting in Moscow airport, unless we find a Russian consular service that is not miserable to deal with :frown:

But still, my visited countries map has a bit more red. I really have to dig out the SVG stuff I had, and make a new version. And I hope I can come back here for another event soon.

A postcard for me it's enough P:

I will download this beta version and test it. You know I'm a Firefox user, but I also recognize Opera as the best browser in the market

¡Saludos, amigo mío!

We will look for a post office  Now I am playing around with the Opera 9.5 on Eva's zapatofono ... so far it's nice (after 5 minutes).

Saludos a ti, amigo. Espero que todo va bien - y que nos vemos...

Regarding your visited countries map, good luck conquering all of Africa. North America and Russia fill up half the map, despite being only 3 countries.

IceArdor, right  And being born in Australia, or spending a night in Sao Paulo, is also helpful.

Ultimately the map thing is a bit silly - and if I go to a few Caribbean countries I will need to enlarge it and wear my glasses just to see. But hey, everyone is allowed a little fun.

And I would like to see some more of Africa - and more of the places in white generally. I have been to some of the less interesting places in the world already.

Aaahh, Kyrgyzstan, such a lovely country - and though I have suffered cold nights camping in the mountains, on three trips already, I'd love to go back.

I've never been in Bishkek though but I've heard it's really just a Russian city - did you find that to be true?

chaals 11. August 2008, 15:54

Dunno - the only Russian city I have been in is Ivanova, and I didn't see enough to make a comparison. Except that in Ivanova there are no signs in Kyrgyz...
