Saying goodbye

I wrote a comment on a blog about saying goodbye to friends. It was related to a moblog entry I made, where I talked about meeting people at going-away parties.

Now I am on my way to a final goodbye party. They are the kind I don't really like much, but they are also really important. In the comment I wrote about not saying goodbye, just see you later. So when it really comes time to say goodbye it is seriously important, even if the person is never there to hear.

One of the things I like about people is that we are mortal. For all that I have days when I just can't find any passion, any reason to get excited about doing what I can in a day, there are many days where I realise that I only have until my time is up, and if I want to do something I should get on with doing it.

Another friend posted a few shots about graveyards and families recently, with some reflections on them. Simple thoughts about what is important, particularly in life. She leaves many things unsaid, but occassionally she actually says them, and she tends to get them right.

Can you miss someone you never met? Certainly. There is a saying from Havamal about how everything passes, except reputation. And you can know people, even closely, if they have a big enough reputation. For even that fades eventually. But that's one of the legacies that we can nearly touch in our lifetimes. We can't control it though, any more than we can build a city to last a thousand years.

Time to move on...

The temple bell stops
but the sound keeps coming
out of the flowers.
