Out of the way

Collecting countries...

, ,

I've been to about 40 countries, mostly in Europe

If you're a geek, looking at the URI of the image is enough to figure out what's going on, but otherwise you can go to the create your own visited countries map place and just click on the buttons, like I did.

I saw this when I was looking at SPZ's blog and decided to make my own map. Once upon a time I had some neat SVG stuff that did something like this. I should dig it out and make a widget or something out of it.

I know a bunch of people who, like me "collect countries". That is, they try to go to as many countries as they can. There is no really good reason for it I suppose, although if you learn something new in each place it's a good thing. Anyway, I measure it by dividing the number of countries I have been to by my age. The brings me to about 1.1 or so - I visited colonial Hong Kong which is now even wierder than it was before in status, but isn't recorded on the map.

But then, I am hardly obsessive about it. (Hey!! Where are my little red spots for Vanuatu? irked ) I have actually spent longer on Singaporean and Thai territory than in Poland, for example. But I never went out past customs in either case - the time is made up of lots of stops waiting to change aircraft.

There are a lot of places I would like to go to, as well. But life is finite, and I have a job to do...

Long lunch IIIPing...

Oh. I looked again, and it turns out Vanuatu gets about 1 pixel. It's a bit bigger than that - it should get a few. Still, it's a cool silly toy.

Not yet. I am working on getting to more of the countries that border the Baltic, but it takes time. I'm also going to actually see a bit of Norway that isn't Oslo soon, after a year allegedly living here...

Getting to the Baltic countries from Norway (or vice versa) has become a lot easier now that Norwegian, a low-fare airline, has flights going to all three. Something is to be said for the traditional method, overland to Stockholm and ferry directly to Estonia or via Finland, but it is slow and more expensive.

Chaals, have a look in FOAF to see how to model this in RDF! :-) mortenf's FOAF Explorer supports it too, and will generate the map.

kjetilk, I ran a project about 3 years ago to make one of these that slurped RDF and made SVG. But it is buried somewhere, and I haven't had time to fish it out again...

Seotools, I was actually in Poznan for one day.

Anyway, I will poke around with the RDF thing a bit more, since I am due to update this.

Hi Charles,
whilst checking what you do and don't call a country, I noted four that will be extremely unhappy at their non recognition.

1. Republic of Ireland or Eire as it's known in that country, no contention here, I think you just overlooked it?

whilst the UK is a political union, it is not a country. Member nations are Countries in their own right therefore
rather than 'United Kingdom' you should use England, Scotland, and Wales, after all, they now have their owm parliaments and their own football teams at the World Cup.

Hmm. I am basically using someone else's classification, but I think of Eire as a separate country, and the same for Scotland, England and Wales (FWIW I have been to all 4).

There are other cases, like the French DOM/TOM. My parents went to what was called Yugoslavia, although the places they visited are now called Croatia. And there are still people who were in the free city of Danzig, now known as Gdansk (historic for many reasons).

I also visit cities who change names and countries, around various different borders.
