Jos, Nov 2008. We stopped for lunch here. Jos is on the boundary between the Muslim north and Christian south and the area is an old volcanic plateau with relatively fertile land, and is a hot spot for fighting. A week or so after I took this photo the city was placed under 24 hour curfew to try and control the violence which had flared up. My travel arrangements on leaving the field station at the end of my second trip had to be altered when on we found out that violence had again broken out in the city. Its a sad thing. It seemed like a friendly, peaceful city the day I was there.
