Group 7 Elements- Halogens (Part I)

Now, Let's continue our lessons with Group 7 Elements
... and answer some questions for more understanding

In the show “The Beauty Files”, why is it that under the same condition (heat) where both Bromine and Iodine exist as diatomic non-metals, Bromine becomes liquid while Iodine remains solid? Use your knowledge of Group VII elements’ properties to answer.
A: Both Bromine and Iodine exists as diatomic molecules because they want to achieve stable noble gas configuration. Each Br or I atom possess 7 valence electrons which is not stable, hence in order to be stable, 2 Br atom need to bond together to share 1 electron so that each atom now has 8 valence electrons which is stable octet configuration. The same thing goes for Iodine atoms.
In “The Beauty Files”, when the temperature increases to about 70 degrees Celcius, only Bromine becomes gas, while Iodine remains solid. Explain using your knowledge of properties of group VII elements.
A: Going down the group, melting and boiling points increase due to the state in which the elements are in. Under same temperature of 70 degrees Celsius, only Bromine becomes gas, not Iodine, because Bromine has lower boiling point (59 degrees Celsius) compared to Iodine (184 degrees Celsius).
In the extra scene about the scandal involving Mr. So di um, Bromine Sevens and Iodine Sevens, why was bromine able to “snatch” Sodium away from Iodine, and why was Iodine unable to “snatch” Sodium back? Explain with the help of a chemical equation and your knowledge of group VII elements’ reactivity.
A: “Snatching” here represents displacing. NaI exists as a compound of Na cation and I anion. However, when Bromine goes in to react with this compound, Iodine will be displaced by Bromine, because Bromine is more reactive than Iodine.
