Childrens cd player A Review of "Sunny Side Up" by Paolo Nutini of Scotland

,

Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini is scheduled to release his eagerly anticipated second studio album, Sunny Side Up, on June 1, 2009 through Atlantic Records. It has been 3 years since the release of Nutinis debut album, These Streets. Ethan Johns, who also produced albums for Ray LaMontagne, Kings Of Leon, and Ryan Adams, helped produce the new album. The album was written by Paolo Nutini himself and recorded in many areas such as New York City, Los Angeles, Wales, Ireland, and Peter Gabriels Real World Studios located in the city of Bath. The album has a Motown feel and a Celtic influence. It is full of stunning sounds and warm sentiments, accented by The Vipers, Paolos band.

Sunny Side Up continues to portray Paolo Nutinis impressive trademark of modern pop that is soulful. It spans soul, ragtime, folk, and mostly everything in between. The album portrays Nutini as re-branding himself as a combination of Bob Marley, Otis Redding, and John Martyn. The tracks Coming Up Easy and Ten Out Of Ten flaunt the talented artists continuously improving skill in creating wild melodies combined with intimate and intuitive lyrics. Nutinis vocal stylings are unpredictable and courageous.

The first song on the album is "Ten Out Of Ten" which is based in ska/reggae. An expressive Rhode's piano with a 60's R&B feel opens "Coming Up Easy," which slowly builds a la Otis Redding, really allowing Nutini to break free. The first single released is "Candy," an infectious and beautiful country-rock number which really highlights his band. There is a more folk-oriented track called "Growing Up Beside You," and an acoustic jazz/ragtime/Dylan-esque track called "Tricks Of The Trade." Some other titles: "High Hopes," "Chamber Music," "No Other Way," and "Keep Rolling." Nutini's usual slurred lyrics can be found throughout the album.

Nutini has grown up since his first release, as evident on Sunny Side Up. His diverse sounds and confidence will grow on you steadily as you hear the album in its entirety.

For a trip through expertly done modern pop with soul, and distinctive vocals, don't let this one pass you by.

Patrick Daniels recommends PAOLO NUTINI - Sunny Side Up for its originality, solid styles, and wondefully paired Celtic-influenced modern pop with a tinge of soul. The New Paolo Nutini CD may not be on the top of the Billboard charts, but it is a gem for fans of his first effort and new converts.
