Autumn Days

,

I hear a song, drifting through my memory,
I try to think of the title, but only 'Autumn Leaves' comes to mind.
I remember hot dogs, and chicken on the grill,
But I've left the 4th and sparklers too far behind.

And I remember you, a few close friends,
who probably think I've forgotten you too.
But never fear. Friendships such as ours, is a thing
that never ends.

Same ol' me, except I made a new avatar...

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Life is Like

Life is like a box of chocolates,

With half of them wrapped in foil,

And the other half surrounded by cracked nuts.

Tuesday Brunch

This is the season of the Lichee. Lichee is a fruit that has a tough skin and several hard seed with a white and succulent flesh. In America it can be purchased in cans. The amount of Lichee produced must be huge. One company alone produces 10,000 tons of Lichee.

During harvest, there is more fruit than can be picked and processed. Visitors to Lichee groves are allowed to pick fresh Lichee from the trees themselves. On the streets there are farmers with carts and mats filled and covered with Lichee. The stores are filled with Lichee and friends give each other baskets of Lichee.

Sunday Sunday

Seems like the time goes by too quickly.

Time passes so quickly when you're having fun!

I guess I am having fun!

Friday

I usually like Friday. I guess it is a habit from my school days. It is strange cuz I work on Saturday and Sunday now. So the weekend is the work time and the weekdays are free. But I still like Friday. Strange.

The Social Animal

Have you noticed that too many people are paying too much attention to what the group believes, rather than what is real?
Do you think that the greater the number of people that believe something, the more true the idea must be?
Which would you probably believe: One expert or 1,000 people with an opinion who were not experts?

I am upset by the growing number of people that believe that entertainment is more important than working toward a goal. True, work is hard. That is why it is called 'work.' But it seems that getting ahead via belonging to a group, or by networking, or by clever subterfuge, if not outright lies, is taken to be the best way to get ahead. It is who you know, not what you know that is most important.

I don't believe cleverness will turn out to be a better device that common sense.
I believe a wise man will make fewer mistakes than a foolish genius.
A mistake by a wise man will harm far fewer people than the mistake made by a foolish genius.

When a society encounters a young genius, it should develop both his intellect and his wisdom. Perhaps when he grows up he will know what to do for the greatest good, other than to sell out to the highest bidding corporation.

The social networking and 'trending' that I see today, leads me to believe that more and more people are following trends, and fewer and fewer people are finding their own path and creating their own successes.

When courage was in high demand, the saying was: What are you, a man or a mouse?
Now, how about: What are you, a man or a sheep?

You know, there are great corporate profits to be made by creating a society that is easily led.

This is my rant, but I hope you think about it anyway.

Mac Text Reader

I don't read much text on screen unless it is a web page. Still, there are lots of text files out on the web. If you read text or other forms of text (pdb - PDF - LIT - etc.) you might like to try this text reader. At the moment it is free. I have no idea how long it will be free.

There are versions for mobile readers and desktops.

I went shopping in Hong Kong at the 'Golden Computer Arcade.'

I bought a Western Digital 1.5 Terrabyte HD with USB 2.0, FireWire 800 and 400, and included software for backing up and securing data.

What do you think I paid?

960 HK$

Is it a good buy?

Luck

You Are a Lucky Person
You are cautious and slow to act. It takes you a long time to get used to ideas.

You are happiest when you are able to be a lone for a while. You find strength within yourself.

You may not seem to be working hard, but that's an illusion. You make hard work look easy.

You are a very patient person. You stick with people and things for a lifetime.

Children's Day

,

Today, June 1st, is Children's Day in China. It started at about 6AM with fireworks.
Last night, every parking space along my street was filled with returning cars belonging to the parents who will be spending today with their children.

Happy Children's Day!

The Souling Machine

At first the report was not believed.. just impossible, obviously a misunderstanding if not an error or outright insane deviation. Still, a few looked into it because at last, they had nothing else to do.
Their investigation yielded several irrefutable, and irrelevant facts:
1 The original Patent application for Souling Machine #1 occurred on March 10, 1919
2 The Patent was granted on March 30, 1920
3 Since the original design had been obtained through Divine Intervention, no changes to the design had been required since the first SM was manufactured in 1922.
4 None of the millions of Souling Machines has required maintenance or repair.
5 This does not count the 375 machines which were totally destroyed by accident in 1945 nor the 44 machines lost at sea in 1960.
6 The 6.7 billion (6,784,344,512) souls which were in use at the time of the report were 100% flawless.
7 All souls (see #4 above) which were in use at the time of the report were still under each soul’s lifetime warrantees, guarantees, and unlimited service plans.
8 There had been no failure sited of any Souling Machine in any of the 19 million sites where they had been installed.
Of course there are lies, damned lies and statistics. The truth of the Report became apparent as the year 2008 unfolded with no souls becoming available to any Souling Machine regardless of the accuracy of the multi-pointed inquiry mentioned above. The debate now rages over whether the Mayan Long Count has somehow become relevant to the scarcity of souls. Differences in calculating the various Eastern and Western calendars and computing corresponding dates in the Mayan Long Count indicate that the actual end of the MLC could have occurred as early as November 1, 2007. But this is true only if the Celtic calendar is considered. The majority of those who have investigated thoroughly enough to form valid opinions have taken the position that this coincidence is just that: a coincidence. Believers in synchronicity will obviously raise an alarm at that.
In conclusion, it must be pointed out that the Report makes no prediction as to when or whether souls will once again become available. If they do become available, there is no doubt that every Souling Machine will once again work at 100% accuracy and efficiency. There should be no doubt in that regard.

Oh well

I had hoped some friends would visit my blog.

They don't.

I guess it is too inconvenient.

Watching Solomon

I saw them walking:
She was graceful and dainty while her steps stirred no dust.
I could not hear them talking:
Though shadows upon the wall hinted at both their love and their lust.

He spoke to her and held out his hand.
She followed, stepping over the Spring flowers that covered the land.

Hand in hand they walked past a murmuring dove.
The swirling fragrances of trees and flowers shrouded their love.

They walked into the cleft of rock,
so dark and cool.
I turned away,
feeling like a lonely fool.

My steps led me home,
so far away and high:
My mountain home.
It will welcome my echoing steps,
my murmur, my sigh.

I wonder.
Who can find their way to such a place?
Too far from where they work or play.
When will I touch her upturned face?
If she comes, what will I say?

Summer transitions

Good news and bad news.

Bad first: I used an old 2002 model eMac in Zhuhai. It worked fine all year. At the end of the year, during the typhoon, I was in taking stuff back to Buji, and left the eMac for a while in Zhuhai. The rain got to it I guess, or the humidity. anyway. It won't start. I get beep beep beep! and the power light flashes 4 times, then nothing. I don't think it is worth repairing. I would have to carry it back to Shenzhen. So, I will think about what to do with it.

Good... I got two new softwares: iPhoto and iWeb. They are very cool. iPhoto now arranges pictures into events. On screen it shows as one pic, but when you mouse over, each picture is shown in turn. iWeb links to iPhoto and lets me publish photos online in a very cool way, much easier than before. So, I am happy with them. I still have to go to Hong Kong to get a new iMac. They are too expensive in China. They think Apple is a luxury goods in China! hahahah!

Here is my first effort:
