Philosophical musing #32

So I read this little quote:

Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me: Anything can happen, child. Anything can be...`

by Shel Silverstein, in "Where The Sidewalk Ends"

And I thought about it... ==>

When I was younger I got very scientific, and very pragmatic. I kept as much of art as I could in my singing and guitar playing, but it seemed that life just pushed me into what I thought of as a realistic mode of behavior. I was too young to know the difference between romance and passion. Too naive to know that I was not in the kind of control - of my life - of my family - that I thought I was. Not that I was a controlling person by any means. I have always been too accommodating if anything.

It seems now that time is not linear. We experience time on a log-rhythmic slope or even an exponential slope depending on the current event we are experiencing, plus the total of all the events in our life.

For example, when I was young and got a new pair of Converse High Tops, I felt like the wind. I felt I could almost fly. I could run forever. The afternoons after school were filled with treks through desert canyons and over hog backed ridges. If Mt. Everest had of been there, I would have climbed in one afternoon.

Summers lasted for years, and the nights were full of falling stars.

This is a youthful attitude. But it is based on the experience of time during that part of your life. New shoes can't lift me now, as they did then. I don't want to hike the nearby hill, let alone Mt. Everest! Even though I know I should!

I tried to keep my youthful attitude for as long as I could, but life got in the way.

Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me: Anything can happen, child. Anything can be...`

It is amusing for me to read these words and understand that there is a lot of truth in them. The main thing that I know about them - those words - is that what truth there is in them is put there by the power of love. What is not there - in those words - in our life - was taken away by fear.

This is Easter time for Christianity. Truly a time to remember miracles, to remember hope, to remember those who died for us, and who live for us as well.

Remember well. The miracle of Easter is based on love, as are all miracles. If you need a miracle, then you need to let love work, and you need to let go of your fear.
