Maximizing the impact of Mini - Facebook, MySpace, and beyond

As some of you know, the release of Opera Mini Dimension beta is imminent. In fact, this is the first time we've been so specific about a release. Why?

As some of you know, the release of Opera Mini Dimension beta is imminent. In fact, this is the first time we've been so specific about a release. Why? We're planning to make this launch as big as possible. We've been talking to journalists, bloggers, and Opera fans like yourself to make sure people know the cool stuff we're doing. Our developers and testers have been working far too hard, and the benefit to Opera users is far too great, for such a major release to go unnoticed.

On the day of the launch, I'll be working with Choose Opera volunteers to let the world know that the Mobile Web Revolution is already here. If we all simultaneously do something small, that could have a major impact, kind of like 100 people jumping into a swimming pool at the same time.

What I'm proposing is pretty simple, but requires coordination and planning. If you want to participate, here is...

The plan

On the day of the launch, log onto your preferred social networking site(s), whether it's My Opera, MySpace, Facebook, or whatever, and make it known to people that the new beta is available and you're one of the first people using it.

If you have a blog, write about your experiences with the new beta. On MySpace, send your friends a bulletin about the beta release, or leave them comments on their profiles. Even better, leave comments using Opera Mini and mention that you're doing so. On Facebook, update your status to say that you're joining the Mobile Web Revolution by downloading and using Opera Mini Dimension. Post links to download Dimension on your Facebook posted items page.

I'm already working with BAMAToNE (who moderates the Opera Facebook group) to let Opera fans on Facebook know what we're planning, and I maintain our MySpace page. In addition to My Opera and MySpace, we're open to doing this on other sites as well.

If you think you can help by posting about Mini on launch day, let us know! We'll even have new banners and buttons for you to use (I'll post them as soon as they're ready).

Every Opera user benefits from more people using Opera. Let's get the word out. Remember, many small actions combined have a huge effect!

I think youtube has an even bigger potential. The way the Mini demos were used before, this time to show the awesome epacsdnal mooz feature. The rating system will decide which clip is best, even if too many fans post ;-)
Now if Opera could produce a MyOpera theme...
What should also have an impact is heavy browsing from Dimension, especially on
sites that show the user agent.

Well, we fully expect people to be browsing with Dimension

Fan-made demos of Dimension posted on Youtube? By all means, please do so, and post your links here!

And yes, you can expect something from us on Youtube.

Can you post the digg link for the release on this blog. It'll get front page if enough people digg it fast enough.

Also, I was wondering, can we have a party on My Opera with games, activities that allow you to explore the new features of Opera Mini, a list of links to blogs/videos/reviews talking about Dimension, maybe a couple contests and party favors. I think that's what made the Opera 8 release so fun and peachy. Also, if we could get a video posted on YouTube of several Opera staff jumping into a swimming pool at the same time, that'd be really awesome to demonstrate what the Opera community is capable of.

Do you know if the simulator at operamini.com will be updated in the same time ? I may have an idea..

Lawmune 18. June 2007, 08:34

dantesoft: I'm not sure, actually. There's a chance it might not be updated until the final release of Opera Mini 4 (as opposed to the beta release).

dantesoft 18. June 2007, 08:43

Aha. Of course, the applet doesn't have to be hosted at the "official" URL.

There's no way to take mobile screenshots, other than with a photo camera, right ?

In addition to the current Opera Mini Simulator, there will be one for the new beta too.

Cheers!

IceArdor: I'm sure Daniel will post something on Operawatch about the release. I think that will be a diggable post, and I'll be sure to mention it here on launch day.

We'll be doing all kinds of stuff on launch day, both on My Opera and other sites. If someone on Choose Opera with blog posting rights would like to keep track of Opera Mini Dimension press/blog coverage and reviews and post about those here, that would be awesome!

I know we'll be starting at least one new contest, and announcing the winners to another.

I've asked Espen to encourage chatting on the #operamini IRC channel (can someone post the channel link here?)

Unfortunately, not many of us have quick access to a swimming pool
