Please welcome Opera Turbo

Opera Turbo Jet plane

Opera loves speed, we all know that. We work hard to make the browser faster with features that speeds you up, but your connection also has a saying how fast you can go.

That’s why we’ve been working on Opera Turbo, a server-side optimization and compression technology that provides significant improvements in browsing speeds over limited-bandwidth connections by compressing network traffic. This does not only make you surf faster, but also lowers the cost of browsing when you are on a pay per usage plan.

Please not that Turbo is not for everyone. If you're on a 10Mbit fiber connection, you will most likely have no result of enabling Turbo mode. However, imagine you're stuck on an airport with a slow Wi-Fi connection... Well, fire up Turbo and experience improved browsing speed. cool

Turbo Speed

Today we start our time limited test phase for Opera Turbo. Please read the labs release to learn more about Turbo and download it. You can also see it in action in the following video:

Zotlan Friday, March 13, 2009 9:26:37 AM

What exactly do you mean by time-limited? When will the Turbo feature stop working?

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Friday, March 13, 2009 10:04:47 AM

I don't understand one thing.

Back when many people were using dial up connections, all the providers here had a similar service through their proxies. You needed to install a small client that acted like a local proxy, then your regular browser talked with your local proxy and the local proxy with the provider's proxy. It makes sense for an Internet provider to save bandwidth and to give a better service to its paying customers.

My question is: since I guess the "turbo" proxy servers are owned by Opera, what is Opera's gain here? I mean, I guess the hardware for caching and compressing and bandwidth for routing all the traffic of Opera's users do have some cost.

Edit:
Since some time ago Google had this:

ninja ninja ninja ninja ninja ninja bandit hi bye

John BarnettJohn164 Friday, March 13, 2009 12:21:14 PM

My first observations so far are these.

The graphic are more pixeled compared to Opera 10 they don't look clear.

Also I am unable to use Wand with Opera Turbo Wand won't log into the opera pages or any other web pages that require a log in.

Read the lab release:

Web sites layout and text will look exactly the same, but image resolution may appear considerably lower as a result of the compression.

Charles SchlossChas4 Friday, March 13, 2009 3:50:17 PM

Shift into Turbo

dirkthetomster Friday, March 13, 2009 5:06:48 PM

DanDaComboMan Friday, March 13, 2009 5:22:32 PM

Agree with John164:

"The graphic are more pixeled compared to Opera 10 they don't look clear."

Want one of these kind for symbian mobiles.

Shaunak DeShaunak Friday, March 13, 2009 7:17:41 PM

This is similar to a proxy rendering mobile browser isn't it?

@Lorenzo:
Google accelerator basically creates a local cache of web pages. This is a proxy.
I had tried Google accelerator once, it used to freeze and crash frequently.

EVEn5 Friday, March 13, 2009 7:26:12 PM

Hi!!!!!!!!!
Where downalds opera turbo?

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Friday, March 13, 2009 7:32:56 PM

@Shaunak:
Besides the fact that it was a little more complicated than a local cache, Google Web Accelerator had several issues. It was shut down after a while because Google said it was consuming too many of their resources ( ! ) and it seems there were issues related the privacy/security about the cached/routed contents.

Generally speaking I guess any proxy has got the same issues I said, hardware and bandwidth requirements and issues that come from the proxy caching/logging private data.

dugg.ed
Ant it is awesome and impressing, the only thing I don't like is that some pages look kinda ugly and some pictures too. But at least I can get to see the idea then I reload it at normal speed if I need it.

fut I find it awesome, so far surfing like 10 minutes on Turbo and saving 20 MG.

Andrew NguyenSouthernCross Friday, March 13, 2009 8:43:03 PM

So will this greatly help dial-up users? bigeyes

yeeliberto Saturday, March 14, 2009 12:35:12 AM

Yes, I think so, some pages load slower with Turbo but only of you have a fast connection but with Dial UP it will improve anything except videos (like flash)

Jesús Saturday, March 14, 2009 7:09:15 AM

Yo no sé p, ¿qué dicen estos acá arriba Yeeli? lol.
