Opera Mini for iPhone

, , , , ,

Good news, everybody! We plan to reveal Opera Mini for iPhone in an exclusive press and partner preview during the 2010 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. This means that we now have a working version of Opera Mini for the iPhone.

While Opera Mini for iPhone is not publicly available, visitors without a press pass will not leave Opera's stand disappointed. Opera will unveil a host of other Opera-powered devices at its exhibit. Check out the following Opera technology, live from MWC:

  • Opera Mobile 10 beta 3 on Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile handsets
  • Opera Mobile 10 beta running on Android handsets
  • Opera Mini 5 beta, running on a variety of handsets and platforms
  • Opera’s cross-platform Widgets Manager beta, running on Windows Mobile and S60 handsets

To hear more from Opera about the future of the Web, attend one of our speaking engagements during MWC:

I'm a bit confused...didn't apple say that they don't want other browsers on their phone?
Anyway if opera is going to the iphone now i've got a good reason to buy one! p

We have not submitted it yet to the Apple App Store. However, we hope that Apple will not deny their users a choice in Web browsing experience.

Does that also mean we will see a Beta of Opera Mini 5 for Android soon. Or maybe even Opera Mobile 10?

All I want is to use Opera on my Milestone wink

Outstanding PR strategy: Showing off Mini on iPhone before submitting it to appstore will put pressure on Apple (given the crazy popularity of Opera Mini). Not approving it will be a PR disaster for them.
Let's see how it works out.

Note for those going to Barcelona: Please please, give us some videos of Opera Mini on iPhone.

Dan Alexandrudantesoft Wednesday, February 10, 2010 8:49:29 AM

I hope you'll record the talks.

PS: Opera should get in touch with Adobe. They also make software that won't ever make it into the AppStore.

Yes, I thought so too^^
After all that Flash disaster with the iPad which caused loads of negative headlines for Apple I can't imagine that they disapprove.
After all they have to maintain a certain reputation.

They better not reject it, if they do there still is making it available for jailbroken iPhones.

I'm afraid Apple will reject Opera Mini, they got their own politics, unwilling to change it

That could be a strong reason for AT&T to apply pressure on Apple about accepting Opera Mini. Last year many news headlines appeared about AT&T's hardenships to cope with all of the mobile traffic coming from iPhones and other smartphones.

There are already plenty of third party browsers for the iPhone, see: http://www.macrumors.com/2009/01/13/apple-allows-3rd-party-web-browsers-in-app-store/

Gruber explains why: http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/02/10/opera-mini

I'm a bit confused as to what this actually offers over the safari browser. Will Opera Mini for iPhone do flash?

Also... will it be able to view WAP?

Don't think so as it is not even stable on the Mac (tho they said they would work on it)

Also Flash is owned by Adobe and not Opera or Apple

For WAP support you can try Wapzilla, its available on the App Store, I heard its really nice.

For the Flash I don't think so.

I would love to see Opera for iPhone available, but personally I don't think Apple will allow that sad

Initial buzz is good thing to pressure Apple a bit.

Greetings from Germany!

orangevodka Thursday, February 11, 2010 6:32:45 AM

Yes!

I hope, in case Apple won't allow Opera Mini on tha app store, you'll release it through Cydia. I need Opera Mini on my iphone!

MarioAl Sahid Thursday, February 11, 2010 10:05:03 AM

I agree Opera on the iPhone would be good but Apple is the ULTIMATE ARBITER on what they allow. I just hope it does happen :-)

AFAIK they have to be (and are) all Webkit based, and many of them are no more than a different GUI for Safari.

Opera mini would be something really new and different though, and I'm really curious to Apple's reaction.

Is this work on iPod Touch?

Benn SmithLeterren Thursday, February 11, 2010 4:55:11 PM

Finally! I've been hoping for this for MONTHS!

NicoHellbillyDeluxe Thursday, February 11, 2010 5:07:29 PM

@ Izabella:

If it works on the iPhone, then it also works on the iPod touch. There are only very little Apps that don't fully run on an iPod touch but an iPhone.

Cutting Spoonhellspork Friday, February 12, 2010 1:04:41 AM

On the jailbreaking front, have you heard Apple's assertion that the iPhone's design will eventually make it explode if jailbroken? Supposedly the application security layer also controls heat and power, so if you break it the phone may catch fire or even detonate. Clever, ne?

Even so, great progress for Opera! I do hope this will be enough to pressure Apple. Mini probably needed to be rewritten using the iPhone SDK (given iPhone does not do Java apps). I feel that OBML, though it is an interpreted language, poses much less risk than conventional JS as executed in Safari. Reprocessing images destroys any viruses that may be hidden within them. By far, Mini should be the safest browser on any phone.

Kahlil JohnsonJzarecta Friday, February 12, 2010 5:59:24 AM

What about Maemo? I got an n900 and I would love to see Opera come up with an opera browser for this platform. I really like the sync option and be able to have my notes.

So far Maemo should be much easier than Iphone since Maemo can run either Qt and GTK and i think Opera did once a version for it. Althought not as great.

Opera Mobile doesn't use Qt, and Qt was just ditched from the Linux versionon desktop as well.

YES! If it gets rejected by Apple Opera should totally put it in Cydia! I wish more major developers would put their rejected apps in the app store like GV apps sad If Apple resects it well, we expected them to be jerks sad

Charles SchlossChas4 Monday, February 15, 2010 2:34:16 AM

Or even a blog post right

Siam Sabbirjorjy27 Tuesday, February 16, 2010 3:15:38 PM

i also think Opera did a good job but i also don't think that Apple will accept opera on their iPhone cause Bald jobs was always and still he is a headstrong person. But Bravo opera. best of luck. smile

Ryan1337woody Tuesday, February 16, 2010 5:28:35 PM

If Cr@pple wont play fair, neither should opera, you should consider releasing via cydia because Jobs is a money grubbing wh0re and we all know it and I would love to use my beloved opera over that wretched thing they call a browser *caugh* safari. I could go on for ages why i hate apple, but thats beside the point. I only have an iPod because it seemed a better choice at the time, but now with a sad piece of gimped hardware in my hands i hate it.
