Opera Tips & Tricks: Web Panels

,

Opera Tips and Tricks

In this round of Opera Tips and Tricks we'll show you how to add custom social media panels!

The first thing we need to know is what a custom web panel is. Press F4 to bring up your regular panels such as Opera Unite, Opera widgets, bookmarks, history and more. In our guide we will add either Twitter or Facebook as a panel.

Facebook in a panel

  1. Go to the mobile site you want to use. touch.facebook.com or mobile.twitter.com
  2. Drag the tab (browser window) to the panel.
  3. Done!

You can also bookmark the page, click "Details" in the bookmark window and make sure "Show in Panel" is ticked. It does the same, but requires you to bookmark the site first.

There are thousands of mobile sites that work fabulous as a Web Panel. Experiment and share your results with the rest of us. What about m.youtube.com?

Is the bug whereby the sidebar is always open on startup when using web panels fixed? If not, this is a useful, but somewhat ill-timed "Tips & Tricks" article...

Also, as an alternative to the six step guide above, you can also drag a link straight to the panel.

Lukášlukaydo Wednesday, September 8, 2010 1:56:14 PM

Hokkuthokkut Wednesday, September 8, 2010 2:20:24 PM

Yeah!

And this is the cause of that good looking fonts. touch.facebook fonts look awful in PC.

Web panel is the best place for dictionaries – especially when reading web page and writing in online editor - all in one window and dictionary with no switching. smile

Cutting Spoonhellspork Wednesday, September 8, 2010 3:28:13 PM

Heh. my.opera is one of the sites I keep in a panel. Agreed that functional "reload every" would be nice, but the simple reload is great. I actually bookmark hard-drive folders into the panel also, where the simple reload is especially handy.

Midhun PankajPankmon Wednesday, September 8, 2010 3:42:42 PM

I think we need to do a "Ten cool sites to put in your web panel" feature, Mr. Aas.

Spadar ShutSpShut Wednesday, September 8, 2010 3:54:24 PM

Should user javascript and CSS not be loaded in panels or is it a bug?

HplusKhplusk Wednesday, September 8, 2010 4:04:41 PM

Awesome trick. I added m.lifehacker.com and m.mashable.com to get updates from my favorites websites...

silaslenz Wednesday, September 8, 2010 4:06:30 PM

Why not just drag the tab to the panel?

jAMIL aHMEDaunqur Wednesday, September 8, 2010 4:06:49 PM

try http://m.facebook.com as panel address. its better viewable.

+1 It very and very usefull.

I have one idea about this bookmarks in panel. What if use twitter, facebook, etc. bookmarks like expansions in Google Chrome and FF with notifications or just with a number of unread messages near the icon? Is it possible?

Patryk ZeraCharly Wednesday, September 8, 2010 4:41:58 PM

Wow. Never even thought about it in that way. Awesome tip.

antyr295 Wednesday, September 8, 2010 4:49:20 PM

Is it possible to customize the icons in the "panel list"?

chuso Wednesday, September 8, 2010 5:05:08 PM

I have done it with GMail: http://m.gmail.com

Sami Serolaserola Wednesday, September 8, 2010 5:16:52 PM

Cool party Much better option than widgets on small netbooks smile This one actually takes less space than some widgets and I can resize them.

enable and disable the opera(Turn off the opera. turn on opera.)

Nyk EdingerNyk Wednesday, September 8, 2010 5:29:25 PM

That is Great! I have added both Facebook and Twitter. I don't understand why someone would add Gmail however. I simply have all my Gmail accounts forwarded to my Operamail that is already in my panel by default and I never have to login to my mail or go to the site. It all comes to me as I am browsing. Yeah, its a different UI but Opera has done well at building a pretty good email client. Thoughts?

Sami Serolaserola Wednesday, September 8, 2010 5:32:39 PM

Thanks for the tip Nyk up I need to consider if I should start using the Opera email client after all smile So far I have just used Google's Web mail service.

EDIT: One good reason to display m.gmail.com inn side panel is that then you see titles of received email.
EDIT: And do not foget you can scale the view with -/+ buttons wink

You could always have a go at some UserCSS to improve it! I also like the dictionary idea! I'll give it a go smile

I always thought panels were dumb and I never used them. This however may change the way I use opera (again smile)

The system fonts looks nice by default! On a PC platform I find it somewhat tough to change these. Using linux is somewhat smooth on my experience. The cleanliness of a mac makes me want to buy a mac for college sad

Nice idea! actually i set mobile twitter in my panel bar, but i've got a problem: i set the zoom of the "twitter panel" to 80% in order see it better in the little space i use for panels. However, every time i restart opera, zoom returns to 100%. Is there a way to set the zoom in a permanent way?
Ps I'm on MacosX 10.6.4

"Right click" on twitter mobile panel and select 'Reload every'...
EDIT: Although I thought the twitter service would check the updates anyway every now and then left But this is what you can do on client side smile

EDIT: Seems to affect only on the page on the current tab open, not the panel confused
