How to make Google Instant work in Opera

, , ,

Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. Unfortunately, this feature requires Chrome v5/6, Firefox v3, Safari v5 for Mac or Internet Explorer v8. So, if you've been hearing a lot about this and run Opera (like most of us here), you most likely haven't seen the Google magic in effect! sad

Anyway, Bruce Lawson made a video to make Google Doodles work in Opera, but it works for Google Instant too:

Or, right click on www.google.com and select "Edit Site Preferences". Go to the "Network" tab and choose "Identify as Firefox" from the drop down list on the bottom. Click OK and you're good to roll!

When is Google going to stop hating on Opera?

Patrick O'Reillypaddy2k Thursday, September 9, 2010 7:11:09 AM

can Opera not petition Google to stop excluding it? if Microsoft can be sued over a stylesheet Google can be over browser sniffing.

Kai OckendorfOckendorf Thursday, September 9, 2010 7:12:01 AM

I don´t need the Google animation! Identify as Opera and have a faster browser wink

Arsenyars23 Thursday, September 9, 2010 7:17:50 AM

Kai Ockendorf, you absolutely right!

Antij Thursday, September 9, 2010 7:19:17 AM

Yeah, but the post is about Google Instant. Have you seen it yet? It's more efficient than normal search.

Edit: more efficient meaning faster, of course, but also less typing

eliotcougar Thursday, September 9, 2010 7:20:37 AM

Ha!.. It works indeed... A lot of Google services become full-featured if you simply "Mask as Firefox"... But Gmail, Picasa and Reader become bugged...

Vehdrehl Thursday, September 9, 2010 7:24:45 AM

I've done exactly what this vid says and yet, no result as far as the letter-by-letter colouring goes. Likewise with any Google Instant effects. Am I missing something? :S

It was working only yesterday.

Are you using local version of google? If yes, try on google.com

Sami Serolaserola Thursday, September 9, 2010 7:53:07 AM

I don't need Google search Web site. I have all the searches I need on toolbar and there seem to be a similar feature working already on Opera 10.61 (suggesting only the keywords I have used earlier) bigsmile

Google Instant is familiar to me from very coincidental experiments with other browsers and I once wished to see it on Opera as well. However, now I think it's better to show only keywords I have used previously. Google instant seem to suggest a lot of keywords used by majority, which are useless for me, thus "drowning the wheat into chaff".

antonovichty Thursday, September 9, 2010 8:25:55 AM

Let's kill Google by filing a complaint against them.
Opera has already succeeded with Microsoft (Browser Choice) and Apple (Opera Mini) : You can also beat Google !

d4rkn1ght Thursday, September 9, 2010 8:36:00 AM

I just don't understand why Google doesn't want to support Opera?? confused

+1

Opera should only work with yahoo and bing

ナガヤンハウスnagayanhouse Thursday, September 9, 2010 8:48:06 AM

WOW! THAT IS GREAT!!!yikes yikes

wollodya Thursday, September 9, 2010 8:49:26 AM

Opera: please, set the identifying as firefox directly in browser.js because the most of Opera users will think that Opera is lame browser and come to Chrome

antonovichty Thursday, September 9, 2010 8:59:40 AM

@wollodya : Bad idea. It would decrease Opera in statistics. I'd rather propose a complaint against google. It would be much efficient for the future.

Agree!

wollodya Thursday, September 9, 2010 9:20:56 AM

@antonovichty: ok, I agree with you, I forgot to statistics, ..so Opera can ask EU to resolve this problem, this is abuse of monopolity

Andrea A. Biancoandreabianco Thursday, September 9, 2010 9:34:43 AM

Thanks for the tip. Anyway I think it would be truly entertaining to know why Google keeps sniffing for Opera since most of their products work great with our browser. Any official word on it?

Mağruf ÇolakoğluZAHEK Thursday, September 9, 2010 9:42:05 AM

yes

No, we haven't heard anything, but we'll let you know as soon as we do!

kerosene Thursday, September 9, 2010 10:00:06 AM

lol, who needs that anyway ??? We love how Opera works, with google as search engine, and thats fine. We dont need something else.

BTW, I dont even know when was the last time i searched google from their homepage (used speed dial search, and now typing directly in addressbar)

Prob some kids, they love this kind of animations. bigsmile

Boozie 'KVZTA Thursday, September 9, 2010 10:12:46 AM

Well since I don't search from the google site anyway, this really does not benefit me much I've realised.

Andrea A. Biancoandreabianco Thursday, September 9, 2010 10:12:59 AM

@Espen : thanks smilesmile

Morphdreamer Thursday, September 9, 2010 10:20:14 AM

This trick also enable new image search look on google.

yourpassenger Thursday, September 9, 2010 10:59:30 AM

only works with google.com

Bruce Lawsonbrucelawson Thursday, September 9, 2010 11:25:18 AM

I just want to remind everyone to set their browser back to identifying as Opera. Otherwise, we'll all look like something else in people's server logs which gives them a (lame) excuse not to test in Opera!

Kimmo Jaskarikimmoj Thursday, September 9, 2010 12:37:20 PM

Personally, I have a dedicated search window in Opera - through customization of the interface, it's right next to my address bar. Why would I want to waste the time to go to www.google.com first before searching when Opera lets me do a search directly from its excellent customizable UI?

That's a lot more instant than first browsing to www.google.com and only then searching, if you ask me.

Zpace Thursday, September 9, 2010 1:26:24 PM

Yo tengo un detalle, a mi no me anda, será porque estoy en Argentina

I have a problem, It doesn't work for my, could it be because I'm from Argentina

Mayur S. KhuntMayurSK Thursday, September 9, 2010 2:26:19 PM

Google is jealous cause it's browser ain't fast.

Why go to google.com to search? Just change your speed dial or address bar search to google. Simple.

Mayur S. KhuntMayurSK Thursday, September 9, 2010 2:32:04 PM

Yeah you are right. Direct search rather than going to google's site. As long as you get the same results directly, why visit the site? Stupid animations of Google.

I'm with Patrick on this one you guys. I don't want to "identify as Firefox" or anything else, I want Opera to take it's rightful place in my Internaut IQ index.

I love how whenever Google improves their site and it doesn't work in Opera, people simply resort to denigrating the feature and Google. It happened last with the improved look and functionality in Google Images, and now the huge advancement in Google Instant.

AmaZinger Thursday, September 9, 2010 4:40:48 PM

smile Use Yandex, it fully supports Opera. up They also made widgets and toolbar for it! :wow:

Plazzmex Thursday, September 9, 2010 7:22:24 PM

Seems not to work for me...

Using Opera 10.70

MariosPattixaris Thursday, September 9, 2010 7:57:02 PM

try this:
1.do a search
2.enter a website that appears on the results below
3.press back

it should go back to the results but it doesn't sad

Erick Omar DelgadoDjehuty Thursday, September 9, 2010 8:17:53 PM

Wow. Damn browser sniffers.

Lotozi Thursday, September 9, 2010 8:51:59 PM

try submitted as firefox on the only google.com (not uk, ua, ru and other sub-domains, just type: google.com)... it's opened dynamic search and search with dynamic picture review

Google's been pulling this too much lately, sniffing to disable all of their new features for Opera users. They need to get chef'ed up, just like Microsoft got a while back.

Alessio Reinermatejakezman Friday, September 10, 2010 12:31:46 AM

it is because american government cant control opera, only non american browser. new world order must control every single man in the world, and they cant because norway isnt in US or even EU. say no to NWO.

Excerpt: Google said Thursday. "We hope to support Opera shortly after launch,"

Lets hope they open support for the other missing Google features.
-Background Images
-New Image Search

I have never known about these features till today as I use Opera and only found out about them after searching what other features don't work in Opera. I fell left out and abandoned by google, I'd rather listen to a marathon of Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus music then switch to ff to enjoy these new features. How long till they update gmail and were blocked out of that for having a "non-modern" browser.

I hope Google doesn't make us choose Google or Opera, because ill stay strong with the big red "O"

At least we are getting some acknowledgment with this issue. I think it's time for Google to include Opera support in all their products like GMail, Reader, etc...

stephenpbarker Friday, September 10, 2010 5:47:54 AM

My view is that if Google choose to exclude me, thats their loss cool

mypcia Friday, September 10, 2010 3:25:17 PM

this post just makes it another good reason for switching to other Internet searches such as Bing smile one more reason why google sucks.

nixdagibts Friday, September 10, 2010 4:02:26 PM

@Marios: Yep, I noticed that bug too.
For all readers: If you change your identification to firefox, you get the following bug:

- go to www.google.com
- change identification for this site to "Mask as firefox" or "Identify as firefox"
- type in some test letters e.g. "test" and press enter
- you get a new site with some search results
- click on your first search result
- click backwards or use your mouse gesture to go 1 site back
- you get www.google.com but not your first results site

But: Its not happen all the time with all sites. Try it more than once and with different sites. More people who confirm this?

BTT: Did nobody notice that there are plenty of more sites/things where google sabotages opera? Picasa, oAuth login cookie, picture search and so on...

oke Friday, September 10, 2010 5:48:32 PM

Now I am 10.62 and since the 9th already I get the instant search very fast and working and I identify as Opera.

I thought I might miss something so I tried the Identify as Firefox. That also works but much slower than identify as Opera

My search bar in Opera for some reason masks as firefox when I search images so that has been allowing me to get the new image search already for a long time.

but for the instant search I simply identify as Opera

noidtluom Saturday, September 11, 2010 2:29:42 AM

10.70 here and it only works if I identify as Firefox sad

James MageeJamesmagee Saturday, September 11, 2010 10:18:26 PM

Funny it works as it should with Opera 10.62 bigsmile
