Opera Mobile for Android coming soon

We are happy to confirm that Opera will release a beta version of Opera Mobile for Android phones within the next month. This was announced today at Up North Web. So far we are confirming at least one of the new features in Opera Mobile for Android will be the long awaited pinch to zoom support.

Opera also announced at Up North Web that Opera Mini for iPhone will receive an updated version this year featuring both pinch to zoom and hardware acceleration.

This is without a doubt the next generation of mobile browsing.

What is pinch to zoom?

The current versions of Opera Mobile and Opera Mini have two levels of zoom. One for the full page width and one for zooming in to read the text. With the introduction of pinch to zoom you are in full control of the zoom level. Text redraws almost instantly at all zoom levels, so text will always look sharp and easy to read. All this without compromising the speed or data compression in Opera Mini and Opera Mobile!

What is hardware acceleration?

Hardware acceleration allows Opera to run at lightning speed. Navigating a page, panning and zooming will be faster than ever. All this is made possible by taking full advantage of the GPU power available on your phone. Hardware acceleration allows us to do amazing things like pinch to zoom for all sites. It also allows a more fluid interaction between you and your phone, improving your browsing experience!

When will it be available?

Stay tuned for more information about the updated iPhone version of Opera Mini with pinch to zoom and hardware acceleration.

The first public beta version of Opera Mobile for Android featuring pinch to zoom will be available from m.opera.com and Android Market within a month!

This post has been updated to add Opera Mini news and a few clarifications.

Watch out - Up North Web tomorrowOpera 11 will have Extensions

This patent has already been lost. HTC Desire and many other phones also have pinch to zoom now.

pinch zoom worried
will it optionally feature classic opera zooming abilities - single-tap switching between inactive overall view and active zoomed view to preset zoom level. it was much better than pinch zoom... especially together with fingertouch (nearby elements)

tomassplatch Thursday, October 14, 2010 12:55:27 PM

Goran Konjevicgorankx Thursday, October 14, 2010 1:04:11 PM

Flash maybe not in this version but there are some news about Adobe and opera working on implementation of flash within opera products (etc: opera mini, opera mobile.. )
It was recently posted on some web site but now i can't find where is that news ...

You sneaky fellas! I've been so annoyed about having to use Mini 5 (which I personally hate compared to 4) on my shiny Android phone for months, but it looks like you were working on porting Mobile all along!

Same for my Samsung Galaxy Spica, which runs Android 1.5 and the update to 2.1 is only available in Germany.
I hope it runs on Cupcake!

The desktop team releases it as an Alpha. Opera 11 is built on 10.70.

CaseCase1 Thursday, October 14, 2010 2:43:59 PM

Any word on whether Opera Mobile for Android will support the "market://" links so we can set it as default browser? This is the single reason why I don't have Opera Mini currently set as default on my Android phones (and don't recommend).

I'm talking about Opera Mobile, not the Desktop browser wink
