Compress data, Save money

, , ,

In the latest State of The Mobile Web Report (PDF) issued today, you can read that Opera Mini saves consumers worldwide more than 2.2 billion USD each month on their mobile data bills. How? Opera Mini uses a unique compression technology, which reduces the size of web pages up to 90 percent before they are loaded on your mobile phone:

Server side compression technology

It's particular consumers in the United States and Nigeria who who benefit the most from Opera Mini's unique compression technology. If you are using your default phone browser, you might be thinking of making the switch. Not only will it save you money, but you will also load web pages faster and access your bookmarks and Speed Dial using Opera Link.

The same technology we use in Opera Mini is also the foundation for Opera Turbo, bringing the ultimate speed to your desktop browser. Odd & Even gives a breakdown how our compression technology works:

Espen,
In what way does you calculate savings from sites that send gzipped content?

Fast mobile browser, no question about that, up
but as to saving money, i think it depends on the network provider's charges.

No matter how you look at it, using Opera Mini to compress web pages and therefore downloaded less data will save you money.

I dont know if my comparison makes sense but my friend who uses desktop and no opera browser pays 100% more than my net subscription monthly.

So maybe opera really help me save some extra bucks up

Trying to attach a dollar value to the data being moved, especially should appeal to the operator side where that cost would take the form of more towers and more optic fibers.

This is very nice et all, but another thing to consider here is the security side.

Opera basically adds another third party server to the game, that is between you and your information, and deals with your private data.

I personally trust Opera, know that their servers are just another one in a ray of information hubs the data has to go through to actually get to your cell, and in a way, the Opera transcribed code is even safer for browsing (say when using a public WiFi connection). But I have seen articles on the web where people criticize the service just because of the security concerns (there were in fact quite a lot of them after the Mini was released for iPhone). Maybe Choose Opera could post something on the subject?

Being entirely fair on the security side, I think I've heard that Opera allows institutions to run a slightly tweaked client that uses their own personal servers. This permits true end-to-end security in a professional capacity, similar to RIM's extended Blackberry keystores.

As to the normal individual's personal privacy when viewing encrypted sites, Opera claims only to hold 1) cookies, 2) raw data compression ratios, and 3) a combined list of all domains and their popularity (without tracking exactly WHO is visiting them). I think it was also said that Opera has no way to retrieve any personal data attached to Mini, because the unique ID and encryption key are kept on the phone.

Infact to be truthful opera mini is the best because of it's money saving. I say bravo to you all!

video never gets old, Turbo is the best thing that ever happened to this planet. Literally no SLOW Internet! Plus when these carriers start tiered plans (which they don't need too but just want more money) Opera Mini will play an even bigger role in the U.S. I think when that happens a opera mini ad will really get peoples attention

unmeasurable thanks to opera, not for being free but for quick access to link friends and the world and for reducing the stress through laptop and pc. My plea is that opera should extend the network connection to more sites. Thanks again and again
