GMail in Opera

GMail is a popular mail service. Many of you have an account, so our tutorial will learn you how to setup GMail and get all your emails in Opera Mail - our powerful built into email client.

All information in this tutorial is gathered from the fan driven website Opera Browser Wiki. It's a great resource to discover new things about Opera, so we highly recommend you bookmark this page (or at least give it a proper read through sometime). smile

Let's get started:

  1. Log in to your GMail account. Once you're logged in, enable IMAP in Settings »  Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  2. Click on Tools (or O-Menu) in Opera and select Mail and Chat accounts.
  3. Click on Add » Email » Next » Enter your name and your Gmail address » Next » Enter your username (your GMail address) and Password. Click on Finish.
  4. Go back to Mail and Chat accounts and select the GMail you just configured. On the outgoing tab, set the default encoding to UTF-8. Click "Edit signature" and edit your signature.
  5. Congratulations, you are now done!

This is the basic configuration and GMail should now work in Opera. We recommend you check out the Opera Browser Wiki for tips and tricks how to further optimize and configure mail in Opera. yes

i had start using gmail through opera mail but it really does not provide the best possible interface for it.

conversation view is sort of available through a threaded mode. but overall, i believe postbox does a much better job handling it.

How do I open Mail in a tab and not in the sidebar? I find it annoying...

Christiancb-at Wednesday, January 5, 2011 9:33:21 AM

my way to use gmail (don't need any local email-application):
a) close opera
b) edit C:\Program Files\Opera\defaults\webmailproviders.ini:

[Gmail]
ID=8
URL=https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s
ICON=https://mail.google.com/favicon.ico

c) start opera and click on an email-adress and choose gmail in the box.

set & forget...
so you have all your emails on every internet-device p

Additional advices:

You have to uncheck the "All Mails" for prevent the mail duplication.
And you have to use the "Advanced IMAP Controls" Gmail Labs app to archive/trash/automatically expunge the delete mails which has "Deleted" flag set.

Were you using the same skin in 10.6x? I have not had this problem, but I hear some older skins could break parts of Opera.

For those wanting one-click Mail access, follow these steps:

1) Keyboard [Shift-F12]

2) Tab {Buttons}

3) Pane (Mail)

4) Locate "Mail" button, and drag it to wherever you want it. I suggest tab-bar or status bar, but address bar should be okay.

5) Now when you click "Mail" button, it will open Mail tab and show Mail panel. When you click button again (or close Mail tab), the Mail panel will also close.

There are buttons for everything, including one-click Mail. I wish the button was shown in Mail/Chat setup, with mention that you could drag into UI for one-click access!

There are a couple of workarounds to solve this problem. Visit the following link
http://operawiki.info/GmailIMAP

Currently i am using workaround option 2.

I use Opera 11; it's just a skin of Opera 9.

Wrong tab is focused in the pic.

Using POP3 mail instead tightens the integration in some areas, but IMAP has good speed and can handle messages a little more interactively...I think IMAP also uses less bandwidth than POP3.

I don't really have an issue with duplicates because I do not use the All Messages pane in the Mail Panel.

So, you're using "View -> Display -> list only" and double-left-clicking the entry in the Unread message list to open the message in a new tab? If so, there's a bug with that currently where bodies are blank. But, you should still see the To and Subject headers etc. in the new tab (unless you have them hidden). Judging by your pic, you may have a different problem though.

I updated the wording on http://operawiki.info/GmailImap to better match Opera 11 and simplified some text etc.

That usually happens after a while if you use an update interval that's less than 10 minutes as Google considers that abuse.

Also, sometimes it can happen if you drop to move thousands of messages at once.
