Opera Tips and Tricks

Creating custom searches in Opera is easy, cool and you can create shortcuts to your favorite blogs on My Opera. This is how you do it:

  1. Right-click the search field and "Create Search...".
  2. In the URL field, replace everything after my.opera.com/ with %s (the percentage s means search in Opera).
  3. Add a keyword, like mo (for My Opera) and click OK.
  4. Try now to type mo chooseopera in your address field.

Have fun, and please share other cool tips and tricks you can do with search in Opera as a comment below!

"y" for YouTube, I use that all the time. Could it be configured as a preinstalled search?

Under this headline I expected some cooler tricks like posting a tweet with a keyword"search" from addressbar or something like that right

Actually, thet's a valid thought. What if microblogging and simple status updates could be accomplished with the same keyword trigger method?

I have about 15 ones
one for tiny urls, one for getting out shortened urls, and many more

What I told with tweeting via addressbar and a keyword is already possible. I could even post comments on a blog post like this one without having this page open.

in address-field? not possible

Cutting Spoonhellspork Monday, March 7, 2011 6:23:28 PM

Apparently it is. Please, could someone update with examples that work on the current my.opera?

Just rightclick the field where you would normally enter your comment/tweet and create a search for it. Then you only have to use it like a normal search from addressbar.

The ability to create custom search engine in opera is very powerful if you learn how to use it.For example I've created a custom search engine for twitter and google translate. In this way, if I want to translate or tweet something, I can do it right from the addressbar!

just type gv before any PDF/DOC url, and view its contents:
Google Viewer: http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=%s
Key=gv

type man <anything> to get its Linux manual page:
URL=http://www.die.net/search/?sa=Search&cof=FORID3A9&q=%s
Key=man

more:
URL=http://tools-on.net/net.shtml?o=whoiz&t=399095244756&s=%s
Key=whois

Name=Add to Google Reader
URL=http://www.google.com/ig/addtoreader?feedurl=%s
Key=gr

Also using custom search for Яндекс.Маркет (yandex.market), Python Documentation, iXBT, 4pda.ru, sf.net, eBay Mobile Advanced Search, NoNaMe, (Post) Mail Tracking, Torrents search, Reviews search, Extensions repositories, translators and some shopping sites.

It is possible to post comments here from the address bar.
Though it'll only work for whatever post you made it for, so it is a bit pointless. I'm not sure about twitter since I don't have an account.

Tested twitter today again before I wrote about it. And the myopera-thing was only an example, I know it is a bit pointless.

Searches are even easier with a custom hotkey - http://ompldr.org/vN3BocQ/173.png - this way, you highlight a phrase, hit f (or whatever else you assign), then hit another letter you can also assign for each search with an '&' in front of it - http://ompldr.org/vN3Bocw/174.png - in this case, 'e'. Hold Shift and you've got the search in a new tab.

In a search box (for example Google.com), click you right-mouse. Choose "Make search" (something like that, I have the Dutch version so I don't know the exact translation).
There you give a key (like go for Google) and then you can test it.

In you address bar typ go Opera and Opera will search for Opera on Google.com.

It's not that hard bigsmile
