Opera 11.50 beta now ready for testing

Opera Next

Opera 11.50 has now reached beta quality and is now ready for testing. We've put a lot of effort into this, and we're pushing towards the final release. As usual, check out the Desktop Team blog for some serious technical discussions and feedback. Anyway, here's what you can expect (major new features) in Opera 11.50:

Speed Dial extensions transform your Speed Dial from a picture into live action! What does that mean? Instead of a static link to a weather web site, a Speed Dial extension can display the forecast for your specific location. In fact, we built that extension.

Speed Dial extensions are easy to make. All you need is a little tiny bit of web development skills.

The last big new thing about Opera 11.50 beta is synchronization of passwords - made securely through Opera Link so you can log on to your password protected sites from anywhere. Opera Link also synchronizes bookmarks, your Speed Dial, custom search engine preferences, notes (yes, you can take notes in the Opera browser), typed browser history and more.

What are you waiting for? Download Opera Next and try the beta today.

It would be good if Opera Link also supported custom hotkeys and mouse gestures.

And hopefully there will be an option to save whole stack as bookmarks.

mhlozek Tuesday, May 31, 2011 6:16:55 AM

What about syncing personal info from Settings dialog? It is the last thing I have to fill up after clean install.

I notice that new tabs in a window no longer get the focus automatically, they are created as 'background' tabs and you have to click on them first before you can see them, a-la Firefox. I prefer the old behaviour. Would it be possible to add it as a preference, whether new tabs are created in the foreground or background? Thanks, Cheers, Tony.

Nick PanovNickPanov Tuesday, May 31, 2011 6:39:14 AM

@Anthony - Not right.. They get focus. It's Opera, not f**king IE or FF...

draco342 Tuesday, May 31, 2011 6:39:17 AM

How are the passwords stored at Opera? Why should I trust Opera for handling my passwords secure? Is it possible to disable password sync and still use Opera link? These are questions I need an answer to before installing these release.

I haven't tried 11.5 yet, but when you start Opera Link in 11.11 (and previous versions) you get the option to choose what you want or don't want to synch. So if you don't want to sync your typed history you just untick that box. I assume it's the same with password sync.

i'd recommend using a private key to use with password synchronization.
password encryption can be broken so if a virus comes to pc it might be able to decrypt the password.
i recommend opera to use a private key that must be needed to sync the password from opera servers.so without it we won't be able to do that.it's a lot safer penguin

Did you read the post by Esteban? It's clearly states how it works and that as in any other case the biggest concern is your own password.

When will the preferred search engine be used in Opera Mobile for Android? I'm really fed up with the default search formatting pages for a mobile device!! I have a Vibrant and I want real search results! and not compacted sites! p

Of course, I also want Speed Dial for more than 9 sites in Mobile!

The last big new thing about Opera 11.50 beta is synchronization of passwords

I was waiting for this feature for soooo long. Actually, from the day I installed one of the pre-releases which had the synchronization. But now I use LastPass...

Anyway, thanks a lot for it up
Really useful one for those, who doesn't want to install 3rd party extensions or trust their data to 3rd parties.

This is exactly what my problem is - are you also on OSX?
I already told the desktop team about this 3 build ago, but it seems they didn't get that fixed so far.down

Guys, the look 'n feel of the new Speed Dial in Opera 11.10 is awful. Seriously. The functionality is very good, but as design, it doesn't compare to Speed Dial in Opera 11.01.

For this reason I STILL use v11.01. Hope the 11.50 will be different.
