I use F.B. Purity (http://www.fbpurity.com/ or https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/details/fb-purity/5.0.0/?display=en). Not only can it hide chat sidebar, and other UI elements, it filters all of those spammy application and like messages.

Just like Eric, mine is constantly refreshing (at least that's what it appears to be doing) and hasn't shown ANY notifications at all yet despite me having had plenty of activity on my FB account. It's of no use at the moment.

It blocks annoying Facebook content (Like, Connect, Recommended, etc.) from non-Facebook websites.
