Dead Island Header

Picture this: You're on your dream vacation, spending time on a lovely tropical island with friends. Naturally you are also using Opera Mini - this island being in the middle of nowhere, the connection speeds are super slow - so you can still post the kinds of status updates and photos that will make your friends back home jealous, and of course check the weather and find the best nighttime parties on the beach.

But then, a few days into your chilled out holiday, some strange things start happening. First thing on Saturday morning, your normally reliable scuba instructor never shows. Then, that night, the normally packed bar at the bottom of the hill only has six people in it, yet on the walk back to your room there are people all over the place who seem to be either drunk or passed out. There are no cars on the road either. Finally, the next morning you are awoken by a burst of gunfire, which is followed by an eerie silence. As you crawl out to the balcony, you see a few plumes of smoke in the distance. As you look down, you are confronted by the burning wreckage of crashed cars and people running, running after other people.

Now you've seen enough to be sure that zombies have crashed your vacation. For many this would be a nightmare - but not for you. You've been waiting for this day since you were old enough to swing an axe.

First things first. If there's chaos and fires it's only a matter of time before the power goes out and that means no Internet. Your grab your mobile phone and open Opera Mini to use its Save Page feature for when things go from bad to worse.

What we want to know is: What are the first five websites you would use Opera Mini to save so that you can bring them up instantly in the event of a zombie takeover? Post your answer as a comment or write a blog post and share the link. A jury of Opera Zombies will evaluate the entries and announce the winners this coming Friday (September 9th) at 12:00 UTC/GMT.

Think health. Think protection. Think survival. Think fast! The three Opera Mini users with the best collection of saved sites will win the most appropriate souvenir: A copy of Dead Island!

Sign up to become a My Opera member, or log in to post a comment. Winners can only choose one (1) copy of the game for one (1) platform. Dead Island is rated Mature (17+), so make sure you are 18 years or older before you enter the contest.

Well, first thing first is a first aid guide - you never know when you might get bitten.

http://firstaid.about.com/b/2010/10/07/first-aid-for-zombie-bites.htm

Of course, you should check how the disease has spread and where to find sheltered camp, so you should probably follow the mass and the army lead. If you can't find anyone who's survived, go see http://healthmap.org/fr/ to know the whereabouts of the human race.

Of course, if you can't reach the nearest camp, better shelther yourself in wait for help, so here's a handy guide.

http://www.slideshare.net/jenniferbaybee15/jacks-presentation-presentation-599698

If you are planning to camp in wait for help, weapons are a must, so here's some example, with the pros and cons.

http://www.zombiehub.com/zombie_weapons.html

And lastly, an all around zombie survival guide as a ebook, since you can always find that useful info that you're missing when you're about to be eaten.

Dark FurieFurie Wednesday, September 7, 2011 12:19:44 PM

Oh, that's easy.

First thing's first we'll need a general medical grounding so a first aid guide will be downloaded. I'd actually run the PDF through one of those PDF to web page converters and save the result rather than this link, but this is the guide I'd use.
http://www.firstaidguide.net/download-the-first-aid-guide/

The second thing is a little DIY. Electric (to charge the phone at the very least) and clean water are must haves, so some basic knowledge about those things will start me off and keep me going for a while at least. Then we'll be creating safe houses and keeping them safe so a bit of knowledge on how to work security systems and install them would be a good idea.
http://www.diynot.com/pages/pl/
http://www.diynot.com/pages/el/
http://www.diynot.com/pages/hs/
Those would give me a basic grounding in things and certainly enough to set up a basic safehouse. I'd be counting on finding books to teach me more detailed things later on though, and living off canned foods until I'd found which plants and animals were safe to eat.

Finally, I'm all for the melee idea but you need some ways to take out enemies from a distance. I can already make a bow so I'd save this page on the off chance that I find the materials (knowing full well that if I found the materials and ammunition just sitting there neatly, that a boss would be through the very next door).
http://www.gunslot.com/blog/how-make-gun-common-materials-self-defense

Should I have time before the networks go down (and I've just saved those pages now just in case so I should have time), I'd look up an edible plants and grubs guide, explosive recipes to add a little whump to my arrows and security perimeter, a detailed guide to generators and wiring a house to run off them, and I'd cache a map of the island on Google Maps for tactical purposes.

What? You mean you don't seriously think about these things?

Kenneth Downingplain-old-ken Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:47:14 PM

First would have to be contacting the US Government to inform them of the old Zombie sitch going on in Banoi- http://www.usa.gov/Contact.shtml

Next would have to be the US Army Field guide- http://www.equipped.org/fm3-0570.htm, tons of useful information in this little link!

Then google maps to plan defensive and offensive strategies- http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Then of course My Opera! Then I could blog and post photos of all this crazy zombie action going on on the island- http://my.opera.com

Annnnd finally, my last link serves two purposes. I know I need some kickin' tunes to beat the crap out of hordes of zombies and bosses, so Pandora would be perfect. This can also serve as a distraction/decoy for the zombies, so we could either go the opposite direction and slap on some explosives to the computer or take em head on. - http://www.pandora.com

Pneumatigpneumatyka Wednesday, September 7, 2011 8:27:08 PM

First of all:
I'm not worried about food and drink - there are stores all around. I'm thinking about getting out of this island ASAP, then I can think about some long term goals and survival.
I'm not really worried about weapon too, cause anything big and heavy should be enough as long as I hit them hard in the head.
I guess I can handle starting or using different machines or engines, besides most of them have some instruction pictures somewhere on them.
There are always more then one way of getting through closed door, so I don't need any picklocking skills, besides there is no time for this (sometimes when they are after you using a key can be problematic).
Google maps is not good in Opera Mini (image and covered area just to small). But I don't really need it.
Note that all presented pages are "everything on one page" kind, so I don't have to navigate further.

First goal is to get out of the building, to open air. First of all I need to find a car (to get to the city, and then to a boat). I need to know how to start a car (something similar should work for boat I guess) without keys, so:
1. http://www.wikihow.com/Hotwire-a-Car

Meanwhile try to find drug store, just in case, and get some serious drugs for serious situations (wounds, bites etc). Obviously I need to know what to take, so:
2. http://surgery.about.com/od/aftersurgery/a/SurgeryDrugs.htm

Some serious painkillers might help if I got seriously bitten. I might need to cut my finger (or hand, better not the whole arm), so first aid for severe wounds is required:
3. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/first-aid-severe-bleeding/FA00038

In any case (car crash, lost in a city) I might need to use some signaling techniques to attract someone or trick zombies. I would choose one page, depending on geographical location (in a city/town, hotel in wilderness etc). First one is more for wilderness signaling techniques, other is better for cities (because of required components, which I would need to find in chemical store of some sort):
4a. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/chp19.php
4b. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070311234933AAqvytu

While trying to get out from the island I would probably rescue some babe from danger (this is how I am). Just in case we would be the last people on earth, lets have some fun:

Regarding zombies... I've used an item that may be of interest to you. This Android-platform app is called ZombieBooth; first, you have to provide the app a head-shot picture (the app has a camera feature, so, you can do it straightaway; or, you can use an existing photo) - it will process it in about 25-35 seconds - then, whamo! In your screen, is your picture - zombie-fied... The facial features move, the eyes blink, and change expression - while incessant grunting and screaming emanate from the phone's speaker. Place your finger on the Swype screen of your Android phone, and your zombie starts eating your finger, blood and viscera running off of the 'inside' of your screen, with munching and crunching sound effects. You can find it at the Android Market - it's free! left right troll no
