Opera By the Numbers

, ,

Here at Opera, we like to think that we know a thing or two about data. We crunch it and compress it and get it down to size in the interests of our users. But what about the data behind us as a company? Recently we started poking around our headquarters to come up with some numbers that provide a glimpse into our collective heart and soul.

And although some of these stats are just from the Oslo office, they do suggest that, overall, we are diehard coffee drinkers with a fondness for houseplants and more than our fair share of spare shoes.

It's not that people lose their shoes, but the weather in Norway requires outdoor footwear you wouldn't want to wear inside!

Leevi Wednesday, April 11, 2012 3:30:54 PM

Spare shoes? Why do so many people have spare shoes (I would understand if walkers/bicyclists would keep spares) or are there just few individuals who are messing up the statistics with their shoe collections.

Hilsen fra Finland! I was surprised by the small amount of coffee drank - here it is more than common to drink a pot of coffee per day per worker. :)

Less than bikes, judging from the size of the garage sherlock I usually walk to work - or take a bus if the weather gives me an excuse...

hobe Wednesday, April 11, 2012 6:05:22 PM

you guys work only 37.5 hrs/week. No wonder we are still waiting for an Opera 12.00 release wait

Doubtful. I think I know how they worked out that number and I suspect I am not included despite the fact that I cycle every day, rain or snow and even when temperatures drop waaayy below freezing. wink

Dude, it is not so comfortable to have outdoor footwear inside offices or can be too hot to sit all the day in boots during the winter, for example.

Did they count all the bikes they could find around? )) I don't think they would ask everyone if one's rides the bike to work.

What unit is the "data saved per page" stat in?

slackwrdave Thursday, April 12, 2012 12:42:26 AM

All in all, Opera Software seems like a company that still lets people bring some humanness to work with them. Try to keep that as long as you can! It reflects very nicely on the products and services offered. up heart

Anton TsigularovTheAtilla Thursday, April 12, 2012 5:49:14 AM

They might have only counted the bikes in the garage, or the ones signed up for the yearly 'Bike to work' campaign, which happens in Oslo. I'm pretty sure I'm not on that list, so expect a lot more bikes in total smile

And yeah... I did forget a pair of heavy winter shoes in the office doh

HåkonEplemosen Thursday, April 12, 2012 6:37:39 AM

2^9 pairs of shoes!

Johan Rasténjohanrasten Thursday, April 12, 2012 8:20:48 AM

I'd like to see graphs for operating system preferences (I'm estimating ~90% Linux here in the Gothenburg office, but we do have a lot of programmers) and number of people who speak Japanese.

huxr Thursday, April 12, 2012 9:08:01 AM

Would have been fun, but "man hours" = "person hours" is only TRUE IF N={Opera employees} is a subset of M={all men in the world}.

I suggest you check your maths. rolleyes

DillonAstrophizz Thursday, April 12, 2012 2:31:39 PM

The data saved per page needs a unit... though it looks like it's probably bytes. The use of B and b together is also a little confusing.

Looking at my phone I have 71% data savings in Mini and according to Google ( https://developers.google.com/speed/articles/web-metrics ) the average page size is 320kB, which leads to a theoretical average savings of 227kB per page.

Last time I looked there was 7 days in a week. I can't imagine the Opera offices being a 9am to 5pm 5 day a week switch off the lights when the last person goes home on Friday kind of place. 750 x 37.5 / 7 = 4017 Close enough for me. Now how many people work there. . . . Oh about half.
