This Week on the Web

Mac users, this one's for you... If you were among the group of people who recently upgraded their version of Opera through the Mac App Store and lost your bookmarks, Speed Dials and the like, good news! You can get it all back - all you have to do is install one more painless little update. Opera 11.63 for Mac is a custom release so you can keep your customizations in the browser. Everyone else on other platforms, just sit tight for now!
Speaking of lost and found, there was big news this week about a tiny particle, previously not found outside the pages of a theoretical physicist's notebook... and no, we're not talking about the Higgs Boson, though it is a bit of quantum stuff... The name of this one is the Majorana fermion, and if you ask me, the really cool thing about is that it is "a particle that may be its own antiparticle" - without canceling itself out. To be and not to be at the same time, that is the question...
Now something for all you Linux users out there, or people who just like penguins for their own reasons...
Estimates of the numbers of emperor penguins living in Antarctica have been doubled by a new survey done from space. Good news for the time being; let's just hope we can keep the right parts of the planet cold for our fine feathered friends for many penguin generations to come!
Speaking of the future, the concept of wearable computers is one of those technology innovations that gets routinely hyped as the next big thing, albeit without ever quite materializing (no pun intended!). But now that Google has announced its web-enhanced eyeglasses, it is predicted that others will soon follow suit. What sort of applications should we envision? Everything from assistance for the blind to "sports-lifestyle" enhancement (meaning, we think, really expensive sunglasses?)...To conjure up even further possibilities for the time being, we invite you to enhance reality the old-fashioned way, and just close your eyes and dream...
Have a great weekend, everyone!
